3D goes 3D

Participating this year’s AU, I was really excited to see the new NVIDIA® 3D Vision™. glasses working together with Showcase. It was really amazing to see people passing by and looking at Inventor data in 3D, using Showcase enhanced viewing capability.
I know this technology from installations at big automotive firms, investigating their digital prototypes in front of a PowerWall, but this seems to get a common thing now, everybody can use with the appropriate hardware. Showcase Professional comes with a plug-in that works nicely together with these glasses or with projectors that can be polarized and filtered.

How it works:
Showcase Professional in general has Stereo capability, it can generate separate images for the left and for the right eye if you switch to stereo mode after having activated the plug-in. With a monitor that is able to process a 120 Hz signal, the hardware splits that into two images per eye, each with 60 Hz. These special active stereo shutter glasses now open the view for the left and the right eye 60 times per second, in sync with the screen refresh. The effect is a 3D window into the software´s viewport.
