Maya and MotionBuilder 2011 Advantage Packs

Posted by mogkc, 13 September 2010 8:00 pm

Coming soon means the end of the month. Here's what we have in store for folks on Subscription:

Maya Subscription Advantage Pack for 2011 Top Features and Benefits

Substance Procedural Textures

Choose from a library of up to 75 new Substance procedural textures, and edit or animate parameters to help achieve a vast range of looks. These dynamic, resolution-independent textures have a tiny memory and disk space footprint, making them ideal for exporting to games engines via the Allegorithmic Substance Air middleware offering; integration is currently provided for Unreal® Engine 3 game engine, Emergent's Gamebryo® game engine, and Unity. Alternatively, textures can be baked to bitmaps for use with certain renderers. Some examples are: BrickWall, with adjustable brick distribution, surface aging, and mortar thickness; ModernConcrete, in which artists can adjust the age of the concrete revealing to varying degrees the rebar beneath; and Eye, with parameters for pupil size, eye color, and extent of veining.

Craft Animation Tools

Now it’s significantly easier to create believable, complex camera movements that mimic real-world set-ups, with four new camera rigs from the Craft Director Studio™ animation tool. Rigs can be connected to a joystick or certain other input devices, enabling the animator to intuitively drive the camera while automatically recording a path in real time. The rigs also enable animators to more easily stabilize turbulent or unnatural camera movements; to add subtle movement to an existing animated camera in order to mimic hand-held shakiness or more violent disturbances such as an earthquake; and to smoothly transition or instantly cut between different camera views and settings. Also included are four pre-rigged models— two cars, and two airplanes—that can be used to more quickly pre-visualize scenes or to help create in-game cinematics. Used alone or in conjunction with the camera rigs, these rigs offer a faster and easier way to simulate complex vehicle motion, including terrain recognition.

FX Assets

Select from a range of easy-to-use effects and assign them to an object as easily as assigning a shader. Building on the Maya Asset framework and simulation toolsets, these FX Assets present only the relevant editable and animatable attributes to the artist, helping them more easily customize the effect to their requirements.

Motion Capture Samples

Leverage the new motion retargeting capabilities of Maya 2011 with up to 70 new motion capture samples that provide useful starting points to help more quickly create pre-visualizations and develop animations. Utilizing the Autodesk® FBX® 2011 asset exchange format, the samples can be shared between Maya 2011, 3ds Max 2011, Softimage 2011, Autodesk® MotionBuilder® 2011 software and certain other applications that support FBX.

MotionBuilder Subscription Advantage Pack for 2011 Top Features and Benefits

Live Video In

Valuable reference video from a motion capture session can now be streamed directly into MotionBuilder and recorded simultaneously with the motion capture data on a per-take basis. Formerly handled as a separate process, this helps directors and their creative teams to better visualize the end results and to troubleshoot errors, helping reduce the need for downstream changes and rework.

Real-Time Curve Filtering

Even the slightest noise or jitter from an input device can be distracting for the audience of a real-time performance animation. Now a low-pass filter can be applied in real-time, helping smooth out noise before the data in the input signal is used to create the on-screen rendering—so viewers can enjoy a more compelling character performance.

Audio Per Take

Dealing with multiple animation variations that each have associated audio is now significantly easier, with the new ability to handle separate audio files per take. This enables animators to switch between multiple takes and automatically change the audio file to match—previously a time-consuming manual process.

Motion Path Up Vector

Cameras and certain other objects attached to a motion path can now be assigned an up vector. This helps prevent accidental flipping, and matches the behavior in Autodesk® Maya® 2011 software.

Tools that will allow us to make a quick and dirty animation for the client and then be able to go back and refine and tweak the final results. Thank you for your hard. I have been using Craft Animation tools since Maya 2009 and can honestly say it is worth every cent.

I hope maya 2012 becomes a new physics engine.

Here's what mental images says on their website about iray:

iray accelerates the creative process by accurately simulating the physical world, enabling designers, engineers and consumers to use materials, lighting and settings that truly resemble what they experience every day.

Now, if that list had something like animators or film makers in it...

Some interesting additions, but I wish that Maya would get a new hair system and face robot. It will be interesting to see if Lagoa ends up in Maya. It currently seems to be a business model based around putting certain new tools in either Maya, SoftImage or Max but not all so people have to buy more than one package, which make sense as a business but is annoying for customers.

Face Robot is available through the Premium Suite

I know it is in the Premium Suite, it is with SoftImage, so you are still buying another program with duplication in tools regardless of how it is bundled. I seem to remember when Face Robot came out there was a Maya plugin. It would be nice to have Face Robot natively in Maya like it is with SoftImage so you can have the same setup rather than the exported blendshapes.

If I understand correctly, the Face Robot plug-in for Maya is there to help read the data in.

maya need a faster high polygone realtime playback like in XSI

Have you tried Viewport 2.0, Naqoyqatsi?

Nice to see procedural textures from Allegorithmic in Maya:
- smaller texture libraries
- ability to use it in game engine with animatable paramters
As i use repeatable textures made with Software from Allegorithmic in Mudbox i looked forward to see them there first, but ...
Also the motion capture examples are really welcome,
are they in real-world scale (1 m = 1 m Maya units) or in ...i would call it Maya-Scale(1 m = 1 cm Maya units)?
In the actual Version Maya 2011 Mocap Samples are 10 times bigger then everything else or should i say everyhing else is 10 times smaller?!? (for example paint effects object size)
BTW i would be glad if you could get rid of this mismatch how units are used in Maya.
Rename cm to meter and get HumanIK 10 times smaller...and did anyone tested to create a HumanIk skeleton with a scene started with units set to m instead of cm?
Hope to see this solved in near future, then i can reuse my assets without having to rescale them all time.

"BTW i would be glad if you could get rid of this mismatch how units are used in Maya."

I totally agree with you. I was actually thinking of posting this question but forgot about it. When will maya have proper units like max or modo. I downloaded the modo trial and it was pretty cool to see ianother app with actual units cm, m, etc in the panel. I am not sure how hard it is to adjust the code to make this possible, but i think it would be nice.

the mocap samples are in real world scale - we know there are some issues with units. the current best workflow is to think of Maya's default units as whatever you want them to be instead of changing them to something specific.

A quick note on Substance - you can not render substances in Mental Ray for Maya, but the Substance node provides the facility to bake your textures through the "export to disk" button that will allow you to create new shaders with baked versions of your substances that will render in MR.

Id like to add that substance renders just fine on mentalray in max 2011 advantage pack...

Ive tried copying the mi and dll files from the max install, but it seems the uv-coords are incompatible.. I get the sort of the correct colour, but no texture...
