I've been meaning to post this one for a while - I must do it now before GDC is a distant memory. Over the holidays I spent a little time playing with Game Maker. It lets you build some classic sprite based games without writing code.
Now, the question is, if I'm making a sprite based game, how do I render nice sprites? Nice sprites having crisp alpha channels so that the edges do not produce blending artifacts with the background. The easiest thing to do is use the Hardware Renderer. Here's an example of the RGB and A channels:
I often start "doodling" with Maya's modeling with a Q-Bert frame of mind - I don't know why, but at least you have some insight on where this character came from.
