What bugs you with Maya?

Posted by Cory Mogk, 25 June 2012 7:32 pm

I'm happy to share with you that we have set up the Small Annoying Things to fix forum for Maya. The idea is that you can enter something that you would like to see fixed. It's open to the entire community and everyone can vote. We'll be watching to see what items make it to the top of the list (based on your votes).

Some items might actually be big items to fix and we can move them to the Ideas for Maya forum. We've had a bunch of people already start on entering items and voting so we know the system is working. Now we just need you to participate. If you feel strongly about your idea, there are buttons to share it to Facebook and Twitter.

When entering ideas, please try to be precise (avoid using words like etc.) and make sure that each idea is separate - do not put two or more ideas into the same entry. If you do, we'll need to send it back to you for clarification.

Happy Voting!

Nice one... Looking forward to post and vote on it...

One problem I have with it though.. A user has 20 votes per forum and there are 2 forums so far, but new ideas cost them votes as well, hmm, ok fair enough... But I can basically do 40 things on the site then I'm done.. After that it's just move votes around or wait for the next round which could be what..... months?

It feels like a forum that you can kind of interact with but very limited (40 times).. Then it becomes pointless... I will forget about the site.. it will fade away into the depth of internet oblivion.

I'm not trying to be a downer but there needs to be something to bring me back to the site after 40 actions, no?

Please correct me if I'm wrong...

Well I think this is definitely a step in the right direction as far as fostering a sense of community and empowering general Maya users.

Hopefully some good ideas/fixes emerge (already some good stuff there).

Thanks.

Good idea, but I'll be honest: I preferred NOT using my AREA account. OpenID accounts just felt right.

And I agree with Wolverine. How long is the recycle? These type sof sites tend to work well because of turn-around.

If these votes are fire and forget for 1 - 1.5 years, I am not sure it would be much better than just having a proper feedback forum.

Cheers.

Thanks!
I've put my 40 cents.
I think proposals should not cost votes though.

The idea with the accounts is so you only have to login once. With the older style, you would have to login with 3ds Max and Maya independently.

Regarding keeping people engaged in this throughout the year, we're open to feedback on what can help. We are trying to find the top items for the year so there is a risk that things go quiet for a while.

Lack of Support (Un-Paid) is ZERO, we have thought of moving to Maya a few times now, but because we dont know the product and cannot find tutorials that cover the issues that we come across, we cannot get help, the support from Newtek for LightWave has been supurb, but when we tried Maya before (now our 3rd attempt) we have again found a problem that we cannot find a work around for, and when you post your request for help on this forum you basically get diddly-squat help back from either Autodesk or other users!? It's a real shame, but without support and only having to rely on Tutorials such as Digital Tutors, which are good, but do not cover you when you cannot do something because you cannot select the items they are asking you to because of a BUG that Autodesk have decided does not need to be sorted or maybe its some sort of masonic Handshake thing in that if you are good enough to know Maya you know it, but you must never tell anyone else! So if ONLY Autodesk would offer GOOD pre-sales support then it may help more users take up their products!

The problems with using a file texture of a large image (for example, a 32 MB image file of a planet surface used to texture a sphere). When rendering, an error message that system memory is low appears, and the image does not render. This forces me to used another animation program to do the task. Can this be fixed? I know that 3ds max handles large texture files without this problem.

Chop down the Autodesk jungle, I'm a simple Maya novice and trying to find anything helpful here is sooooo hard.
Perhaps I shouldn't be venturing where elephants play. F1 help has gaps in it. Maya Forum (once you find it) gives the impression it is run by some over qualified ex public service type.
I like Maya but it's official support sucks.

Maya is proving itself to be the most buggy piece of software in the history of software. I've been using it since it came out, in fact, I learned how to model in Power Animator, and have used Maya ever since we switched to it from PA on "Treasure Planet" at Disney. Maya has just gotten worse with every release. With every new, exciting tool comes new bugs. And now I can hardly get work done, it crashes so often, or just plain starts acting weird. The "Interactive Split Tool" has stopped working as it should. It no longer snaps to points, just edges. I haven't changed anything - it just stopped working. If I have a model in "smooth" mode (the "3" key) and I try to delete history from it, Maya crashes. For some reason today, as I was working, all of a sudden if I tried to select a vertice, it show ALL the verts on every surface of the model. WTF??? Why is this software so so buggy??? And getting any help is impossible! I'm going to do something crazy and post my real email address here. If anyone wants to talk about why I'm so pissed off at Autodesk, feel free to write to me. I'm a rational person, just looking for some answers. I need Maya to do my job, and it makes me crazy that it breaks so often. Please help.

By the way, my email is pratfall@sbcglobal, if anyone wants to talk about how buggy Maya is. (I'm talkin' to YOU, Autodesk!!!) I'm a 17-year animation industry veteran and have been using Maya since it's creation.

I have several complaints

Bump Mapping: If I want to change the bump depth, I can either bang my head for hours trying to find the control with the interface, or I can track it down through the hypershade interface (and I am not a fan of that because that method is equally byzantine). Why not have the same tab in the attribute editor as soon as I click on the bump-map file? You know: where it would be easy to find.

Next one is entirely my short-coming: I have a twitch, so that occasionally while I am holding down the left button, I also click the right. Not a big deal in any other program, but with Maya, the Outliner turns blank, if I select any other object, the attribute editor and key-frame sections are blank, and effectively I can do nothing. The only solution I have found is to save the file, close down the program, and start it up again. Is there a reason for this "feature"? Is there a way to escape it without the full shut-down/restart?

What purpose do the 2 and 3 serve in the interface? I know that they make a piece of geometry more rounded, and discovered (after much avoidable reconstruction) that pressing 1 turns the effect off. I was just wondering what purpose they could possibly have ever served--how could that ever have been useful?

Python is a 2nd class citizen still in maya. Mel is first class. Many mel functions still don't exist in python. I am constantly having to use "mel" commands wrapped in python. Another annoying thing is python is much much slower to execute some items than mel is. They should not be any different in my mind. In fact, python in some instances should be almost comparable to its C counter part.

Additionally, the lack of in-depth python examples on complex problems does not help much. I sometimes have to find "mel" code in the mel docs and re-implement that code in python. This is because much of the python examples are very basic... They only show use cases for maybe 2 or 3 of the flags. For the more complex flags its sometimes hard to infer from what the docs are saying to how to implement that code.

Thats my rant.

Patching more frequently. I wish maya team would do monthly builds for bug fixes and patches for customers rather than service packs. Service packs reminds me of windows. We all know how vista turned out.

Point being, it would be nice to get a patch once a month for the entire Maya community (regardless if you have Subscription Advantage or not). I believe the Subscription Advantage users should be entitled to even faster support / fixes. Many annoying bugs are patched but only ever patched in say a Service Pack. The release schedule appears to be more like every 6 months. In that time, it becomes very frustrating to deal with work-arounds and bugs. Especially when Maya Saving is broken (e.g. Maya 2011 had an ASCII save bug).

In general, by the time a Service Pack is released, a new version of maya is on its way. Once that new version is out, then all service packs (unless critical) seem to stop on older versions. So what you get is 80% of the bugs fixed in say 2012. Then 2013 comes out and you start back a square one with a host of new issues to work-around.

People like stable and reliable software, if features need to be dropped because of it. I would much rather a rock-solid piece of software than a new 20 new buttons to press.

Last one, I promise It would be nice if all Autodesk products (ore maya collections of products) were available for a monthly subscription much like the new adobe model. I like this idea for two reasons.
1) Sometimes a project comes up, and I have to turn it down because I don't want to pay for an older version of maya or better yet the newest version.
2) Transferring that fee to the client is a bad idea in some instances. I have done it in the past, but in recent years its getting harder and harder.

Ive been using Maya since version 4 (alias wavefront product). I hate interactive creation of poly and nurbs primitives!!! Yes I disabled it but I wish it was not there at all.....It is part of the reason I left 3ds max 6 back in the day!

Well, there´s a bug that is making me crazy: for some reason, the material I have applied in one or more objects dispears... It´s impossible, for exemple, create a new render layer and apply a different material in some objects inside the render layer. Many objects lost their materials, including in other render layers... Some times, I open an existing file, and, surprise! Some objects lost their materials...

There is a problem when you open a file from 2012 in 2013

Im using the trial version for testing without any upgrading.

The imageplane becomes a transfom group with contraint attached
Any work that was created in 2012 with the imageplane will become like
this.

This problem had been happening since the first launch of maya 2013

I had been waiting for this fix but it seems to be leftout in sp1 and sp2

Why does the imageplane become a transform group with contraint?
What and where is the fault here? Is there any solution?

This never happened to me since I had been using maya 4.5

Also when you extrude, there is marquee option for you to toggle keep face
together when you extrude faces in 2012 (ctrl+shift)
Now there aren't any. Did Autodesk changed this?

I don't mind all other side bugs but it is getting worse, problems like this can hinder from getting any work done.
If there are no solution, then maybe I should switch to another 3d
software.
I don't think I want to upgrade or purchase if Maya still is, imperfect.
Any work done in Maya 2013 is backward incompatible to older version.

The material bug is driving me crazy too. It happens very often when you are working with render layers and you try to assign a different material to an object in one of those layers: not only your material get not assigned, but your other objects in the rest of your render layers lose their materials too, and many times, Maya just doesn't let you to reassign them again.
For this reason, I have to save a different scene file for every render layer when I need to change that layer object materials, just in case.
This already happened with 2011 version, and I think is a really serious bug.

Hi all.
I am having an issue with nHair follicles. I set up a system where main dynamic behavior is driven by a nucleus managed hairSystem. But I need to override some of the parameters in several follicles, mainly the startCurveAttract and stiffness. This is not working...

Please redesign the timeline in Maya. Why are keyframes paper thin. They are very difficult to grab. Maybe take some notes from Cinema 4D's timeline design.

1. I did some test with nhair. Unfortunately the simulation is not accurate and often follow to Maya crash.

2. I think that it would be better if there are more type of deformers...

3. Maya fluids are too slow and heavy, but may be it's normal. It will be great if there is possibilities to create custom fluid voxel grid /generated by an object/. Also... I don't know if there is approach to retime fluid simulation. For example if we want to watch explosion on slow motion speed. ... and to integrate an opportunity to deform the fluid.

4. ...

... i hope this thread is still of importance ...

What bugs me about maya? bugs. duh!

I think my #1 issue is support/subscription costs.. it is honestly the ONE primary hesitation I and others have with upselling to purchase. It has not changed in since I started using Alias back in late 90's.. seriously, there must be a more affordable way to offer all customers product/bug resolution.

I would also like to see more emphasis and integration for actual "game developers/studios".. the entertainment suite now comes with Turtle.. which is a freakn' awesome step in the right direction. BUT why not the gameware innovations.. why is this not included. It seriously should be even at a standard level suite purchase. They're doing great things over there with Kynapse, Beast, HumanIK, on and on... Scaleform! Really, i cannot emphasize this enough, more holistic envisioning and integration with Maya would be #2 on my list.

As earlier mentioned, the Adobe Cloud is nice and affordable and makes great sense for small studios/ individuals to have complete suite access at a very very low cost. This should be something Autodesk is considering for all of its' products. However, the pricing MUST make sense. CS6 master and a ton of other tools and features are available for only 50$ a month.. well over 2700$ worth of software. That's 4.5 years of subscription, an exceptional value with continuous upgrades AND support included. Autodesk needs this approach.

Can somebody help me on this issue... Tried Most the possibilities but all in vain...

Hi Cory.
Just wondering if Autodesk could support/host an area on their site for python extensions that are compiled against visual studio 2010 by individuals who are willing to share them? As you're no doubt aware (ie: for the benefit of other readers) there are python extensions that are no longer compatible with 2013, and not everyone has access to someone that knows how to recompile. Having a place where people could upload for others to benefit from would be really helpful.
Hope you're well.
