I wanted to reply to a post on CGTalk about a "New Version" of MotionBuilder:
We announced MotionBuilder 7.5 Ext2 last week at Siggraph 2007 in San Diego. This release is all about platform support (64bit WinXP and MacIntel!), performance and optimizations (you are going to love the load times) and +200 fixes/enhancements (especially in the OR SDK and Python). This release is going to be huge for the MB community at large. How can I be so confident? The process in which we plan a new version of the software is a continuous process, but revolves around balancing the needs of our customer base, what new requirements the market has and what the product needs to do to remain competitive in the future (this can include cleaning up existing code in the software, adding platforms and overall stability/performance). What we did for this release in particular was to focus on what our customers had as “High Priority Needs” for MB and it was very clear that there were two major issues they needed resolved ASAP: large scene handling and application performance. These two issues were more important to them than any new feature or additions to the software. And when I say “them”, I am referring to a mix of our largest games/film customers, as well as feedback we get from user forums, Beta feedback and direct email feedback. Based on this, we were fairly certain what we needed to do for this release in order to keep the growth of MB into games and film productions, as more and more productions are looking to work more efficiently and there is nothing faster than MotionBuilder for animation. This release is all about ensuring this stays true for the future. I encourage you to get your hands on the release as soon as it’s out (soon) and test the speed for yourself. Grab the 64bit version and load up a scene with 32 characters and 7k frames of animation and then “Plot All” (I experienced this on site at a client site who was on BETA and not only did it not crash the application, it plotted fast enough to make the client go “WooHoo!!”). What is next for MB? We had some great meetings this year at Siggraph to talk about the “next” and as soon as we have our plan finalized, I’ll start sending out hints as to what we are going to tackle “next”. Cheers!
