Hi Everyone,
I have updated the this blog video to the lastest Smoke 2012 version... now incorporating Pixel Spread! Enjoy!!!!
THE MODULAR KEYER
I have had a few user requests asking me to explain what the modular keyer is and how it can be utilized to build better keys when using Smoke.
The first impression I always encounter with new users is that when you first open up the modular keyer, it looks so scary!!!!!
I thought that too when I first saw it a long time ago. However once you get into the guts of the Modular keyer, you'll very quickly see how it gives you an unlimited number of options how to pull keys simply by the way you arrange the tools. It can tackle straight forward keys or the more unbalanced colour challenged green or blue screens.
Just a final note I think this a great intro for those of you wanting to get their heads into it and also a great refresher for the seasoned user.
The Video is broken into two parts due to the length.
The videos are best watched at FULLSCREEN with the 1:1 setting
The features shown are current with Smoke 2012
I mention the 3D keyer which is another keying tool which is exclusive to Flame. It basically helps you pull a key using a 3D colour cube and fits very well with the modular keyer. I left it out as it is quite in depth and I wanted to cover the Modular Keyer pipeline applicable to Smoke.
I showed a few examples how the modular keyer can be used but I do encourage experimentation. For example, mattes could be fed from the matte pipeline into the front colour pipeline if you want to grade with your keys. More food for thought!
Hope you guys enjoyed this blog. Please let me know your feedback as always....
Take care!

Hi Grant, a quick question. So I keyed my footage with modular keyer....Now I want to export it without the background image just the front and it's alpha. Is it possible? If yes then how can I do it?
Thanx in advance for your help,
Ashish

hi, the 3d keyer is flame specific and this blog covers mostly Smoke. I will pass this onto the training team so they have your comments. Regards Grant

Will you be doing a tutorial on the 3D keyer? This would be great!

I see. It's like an extra channel for overall gmasks.
Thanks Ultimate_Smoker*

I would look at it from a flexibility point. You could have a gmask in the main pipeline which affects the portions of the key and also have a master gmask in the garbage mask pipeline watching over the entire image. Also it is worth mentioning that you can pull connections off the gmask to the colour channel for instance. You could create a matte in the matte channel and feed that to the colour pipeline to only correct a portion of your image.
