I was fortunate enough last week to present at Skillsets Animation and VFX showcase. I remember when I first started out and it wasn’t easy, so it’s good that students have a platform to hopefully get their name and work out there, while also networking with industry people.Every year Skillset bring together the best and brightest of the UK’s animation students with representatives from the VFX and animation industries at an annual Animation Showcase in Soho, London.
The Showcase itself gives prospective employers the chance to meet and see the work of some of the UK’s top animation students. These students were all from Skillset accredited animation courses, which are centres of excellence that provide the most cutting-edge, industry-relevant training available. Exhibiting this year are the likes of Ravensbourne, Teesside, Glamorgan, Bournemouth Uni and the Arts University College, National Film and TV School and University of Wales Newport, plus other promising ‘rising star’ courses like Hertfordshire, Falmouth and Bradford will have stands.
It was great to see such a high quality of work on display, which is exactly what we need in the UK right now. Earlier this year the Livingston-Hope review reported on the skills needed for UK school leavers and graduates to fully engage with the UK's world-class video games and visual effects industries, whilst also highlighting some shortcomings in skills, courses, educators and industry alike.
It was a very fair review and also showed that everyone has a part to play.
However showcases like this do show that we can produce the talent to fill the skills shortage that the UK industries have, which is great to see, but there’s still more work to be done.
Education is also very much part of Autodesks business as well, and if you are attending Siggraph this year, which is approaching pretty fast, then please visit the following page and find all the information you need to know about our Autodesk Student Experience Event, Education Summit, Certification Lab and Training opportunities at SIGGRAPH 2011. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to network with like-minded students, professionals and industry leaders during SIGGRAPH 2011.
Even if you can’t attend Siggraph then check out the page anyway, which contains some really good info about what Autodesk do for M&E education: http://area.autodesk.com/siggraph2011/student_workshop
