X-Rite`s ColorMunki map plugin for 3ds Max

Posted by jfyelle, 17 December 2010 4:00 pm

X-Rite published a 3ds Max map plugin for its ColorMunki spectophotometer.
Here's the brochure announcing the feat.

The ColorMunki, available to you at ~500$, is a little marvel enabling its users with the ability to:

  • calibrate display (screen and projector). It periodically propose to recalibrate the display, no more color drifting!
  • calibrate printer
  • scan ambient luminescence
  • scan reflectance values (colors) into CXF colorbooks

About the plugin

  • The 3ds Max plugin allow the Max user to associate color from a CXF colorbook with a map channel.
  • Colors are kept in the colorbook. changing color choices in the maps do not lose the captured (and valuable) color information.
  • Change in the colorbook are accounted for (think of this as XRefing the book).
  • Goes in the direction of the slate editor philosophy.
  • Supports both MR and IRay

This brings the Max user one step further in our quest for color management!

w00t - merry X-Mas!

I can't wait to give it a thorough test drive.

How cool is that! Thanks for the info...

Hmm, did you actually try it? I just installed and cant get it to work. I wrote an email to support of xrite. The plugin itself does run correctly and one can select a new map type which reads a colorbook file. But regardless which colors I choose the resulting linear rgb value is always zero and the wavelength graph is always a flat line at zero.

I use 3ds max 2011 64-bit with subscription advantage, service pack 1 and hotfix 4. I emailed to xrite and hope to get an answer to the issue cause I 'd really like to use this plugin... any suggestions? Does it run for you?

The 32/64 bits plugins are for 3ds Max 2011 and 3ds Max Design 2011.
We successfully tested the builds we received. - it does work very well.
I'm currently checking if there was a glitch with their web publishing.

I'll keep you posted.

Apparently, their website was updated ~30mins after your last post.
Please give it a test - (whisper : I'm on vacation right now and risk being punished if I'm caught on this computer. /whisper)

I tested it, but still no luck. I reported the issue via subscription center. Thanks for your help... and enjoy your vacation

So, in essence, there is no kind of support since Autodesk says that Xrite developed the plugin and Xrite says that Autodesk developed the plugin....MUHAHAHAHAHA. Communication is king is guess...lol

Perhaps the issue doesn`t show up at the right moment, look at your calendar and guess what the world is preparing for right now. Our employees are no different... Happy Holidays!

I know for a fact the plugin was tested by some of us successfully.
So I'm betting this is just some confusion at the web publishing level.

Wobi, I've tested the plugin downloaded from the web into my computer on a fresh installation of 3ds Max 2011 Design and I'm afraid it worked right away. I've captured the moment : http://screencast.com/t/9IjD6cYkvGI

At this point it`s either
a) you have an old version of the plugin that did not work
b) something is wrong with your installation (is it the Max version?)

I can try to update the SP to match your config and see if it still work.
