I think this is the first time we've released a hot fix with the release. We're trying to be more responsive with releasing fixes to the community - so we can squash the bugs before you find them.

3ds Max/Design 2010 made a big push on fixing hundreds of legacy bugs and all the top CER reports (make sure you submit those!). Here is how the beta forum felt about the stability of the beta release (which is always worse than the final release):
- 11% hadn't experienced any crashes
- 72% were experienceing no more than 1-5 per week
- 5% were experiencing more than 5 per day
- 46% felt the stability was better than the prior release (92% felt it was as good or better)

So, we think we have a solid release as measured by our statistics. We just hope this is the case for all of you too. Since our beta means that in general, there are no other plug-ins involved, it is perhaps best case. Third-party plug-ins can definitely affect the results as can graphics hw and drivers. Perhaps the biggest cause of mystery crashes are the "out-of-memory" problems that occurs when you're working at your RAM limits. These are near impossible to resolve by us (moving to a 64b OS and the 64b 3ds Max makes a huge difference in these cases).

Official hotfix notice:
Customers activating Autodesk 3ds Max/Design 2010 software are encouraged to download a hotfix that has been created in order to experience optimum performance.

This hotfix addresses the following issues:
• Performance regression under certain conditions when using mental ray with Final Gather bounces
• Stability issues when using an instanced Cloth modifier
• Stability issues that occur during file load with instanced geometry and Hardware Shading enabled

Hotfixes are better than no fixes :-) If this is the new support philosphy you've won a supporter in me. Keep'em coming Ken.

Hi Ken,
How do you win in this game? You really want to know?

You won't win at all regardless what you do. Thats what I learned. If you produce high end 3d applications or simple computer games. You have customers and you can't make it right for everyone.
You will have people saying "Hahaha! You have a hotfix for the release. You couldn't wait heh? Making easy money :)" And you will have people saying "Oh cool. They care about us and fix some issues before we get them."
So what should you do? In our business we learned talking and caring to / about our customers is the best way.
There was an issue yesterday with the viewcube on some graphic boards in the forum here and you picked it up in your blog! So there is one who is talking to us, explaining and fixing.
3dsmax 2010 is a great software with a lot of cool features I really can use, material explorer, realtime viewport, ribbon tools and so much more.
Along with so much new features it is almost certain that bugs occur. We all are humans, we all do mistakes and you can't betatest the things each of us here does every day :).
Well I accept that as long as there is someone saying ( and doing of course ) "Ok, there is an issue we will have a look at it and fix it."
With your hotfix you show that you will react very fast. As you said this is the first time in history and I really like this way. Having one explaining and listening is much better than "Haha Autodesk never cares about its customers".
So keep this way. Its good. Now I'll play with the new tools lerning them.
Greethings from the other side of the planet :)

Matthias

re: bootcamp
Well, we only tested the bootcamp config on existing systems as of Feb 2009. Therefore it is unknown if it will work on future systems. So, hopefully it works and no issues. There is a chance that we'll take the "we don't support that" approach if we start hearing of problems. Most recent hw quals are here:
