SIGGRAPH 2009 - What's Up?

SIGGRAPH is quickly bearing down on us, and if I need an excuse for the reason I haven't blogged lately, this would be one reason (of many). This is an interesting year in that the economy sort of sucks and the show is being held in New Orleans. This means we have little ability to predict who will actually show up for this event. It also means we’ve made some decisions about how we’ll do SIGGRAPH this year that are different than other years. One example is that instead of throwing money at a big party, we’re throwing money at a major effort to take our presence “on-line” via the Area. We decided that since many people would not be able to go this year (for one reason or another), we could at least try to bring the show to them. Stay tuned for details on the Area announcing our coverage. Shane and I will be there and we plan on talking to a maximum number of max users. We’ve got an announcement or two for the show, so watch this space when the show opens. Hopefully it is well understood by now that we will not have a new release of 3ds Max at SIGGRAPH. We didn’t have one last year and this year is no different. I don’t want people expecting something that isn’t going to happen.

I know there will be many interesting demonstrations of 3ds Max and various “real-time” rendering solutions. I’m sure most of you know about Chaos Group’s excellent Vray-RT, but there are a couple other things that should be making their debut at SIGGRAPH. I think it is safe to say that 3ds Max will be unique in the number of interactive rendering tools that support it. I’m dying to say more, but can’t.

Hopefully most of you saw my EUE 2009 blog and the response of some of the 3ds Max users that were exposed to our long-term plans under NDA. We’ve got a very exciting roadmap for those of you travelling with us. It's possible that 3ds Max/Design 2010 gave you something to be excited about and we’ve now got the challenge of topping that. I’m pretty confident we might just do that. Hopefully, you've now got more confidence in what we're telling you (or actually what we're not telling you).

Looking forward to seeing some of you at SIGGRAPH and talking to you directly.

Seriously, it would rock if you guys broadcast it for us less fortunate folks. And one important thing - Anselm will be presenting Particle Flow box 2 - totally phenomenal - on the Turbosquid booth, can you gius do something to broadcast that too? It's deeply Max related... :)

I think 3ds Max users are big enough to allow Maya to hog the limelight once every 10 years. No more than that of course. :)

I think anyone in the VFX industry knows that 3ds Max is a workhorse. I expect that since most of the shots on the film 2012 were done with 3ds Max (I'm told) will become known when it releases later this year. I expect that we won't pass up on that opportunity.

BTW, we did reveal XBR to everyone. XBR = Excalibur. What, you want details? Isn't that implication enough? You can't please everyone I guess. I know a few of the people on this thread have touched the sword. No one has pulled it out quite yet. It's been pulled out about a third of the way...

With Softimage thrown into the mix it would have been worse than last year.

It was painful enough to watch the Maya-centric 2009 user group with the definite undertone of "Max Cannot Do This So We Switched To Maya", despite of the last Stereo sequence at the end of the show being done completely in Max (not that anyone cared to mention it ;o).

That being said, the food was superb!

SideFX aren't having a user group or party either this year from what I have heard, no masterclasses from them as well though they are uploading masterclasses recorded elsewhere. From the looks of things it will be a quiet Siggraph.
