First of all: you can download this plugin from the nVidia forum,  in case that doesn't work you can also grab it from Jeff Patton's blog.

So what does it do? From the nVidia forum:

Lately, we've been busy piecing together a 3ds Max plugin that provides access to iray's powerful material model. Here we are, with a material plugin that features (amongst other things):
  • 3 layers: Glossy Coating, Metallic Flakes, Glossy/Diffuse/Transparent Base
  • Backscattering (for realistic fabrics)
  • Metallic flakes (for great car paint)
  • Sub-surface scattering
  • Thin film coating
  • Spectral dispersion
  • Anisotropy on each layer
  • Emission (self-illuminance)
  • Displacement, bump, round corners, cutout

The attached package contains documentation and binaries for both 32-bit and 64-bit. It is compatible with 3ds Max 2013.

Please be sure to read the documentation before you proceed, especially the "Known Issues" section.

I'm having trouble getting a transparency to work. I want to to make "card" people. I set a texture on a plane with the image of the person. the background of the image has an alpha over it, so as to just give the illusion of a person. The alpha usually makes the grid transparent in the silhouette around the person. I've done this in Maya and XSI, but can't see any place to plug an image for transparency with Iray material. I see translucency. But not transparency! How would I go about getting this effect?
