Another way of bringing mesh data into Inventor is available on labs.autodesk.com
The 2013 version of the Mesh Enabler for Autodesk Inventor lets you import STL files and then convert those into base features. The previous post exporting_3ds_max_models_to_inventor describes how to do this using the dwg file format.
The conversion process can do some simplification of the faceted data: it tries to merge triangles into a single face where possible. The 2013 version of the Mesh Enable expires on January 31st 2014.
