Very nice features - But aren't there any more smaller new features ?
The perspective match seems like my dream feature.

Still hoping there's more, even just smaller ones like Nirsul said. Unless I've missed something, really we're looking at only 5 new features for the entire year (geppeto/populate has been known for a long time, and the viewport performance improvement is nice but feels like it should be a downloadable update).

I can understand that Populate and the viewport improvements were big tasks, but this is not a very meaty release, period. And I'm hoping there aren't many glaring bugs like there has been in the past with releases.

Generally I've seen a lot of disappointed response to Max's releases the last few years because it seems like it's moving at a snail's pace and it's such a widely-used product you'd think more resources would be put into it's development. I'm optimistic for the next year with Frank Delise coming into his role.

This release has some nice features but I don't think many (myself included) will upgrade unless they're in dire need of some of them. If only Max 2014 felt as refreshing as Autodesk's new site does *hint hint*

im sure there will be other little updates. There was no mention that i could see about the mental ray features that was shown in one of the sneak peaks(IBL, and unified sampling) granted those features have been there for a while hidden, but the lack of any mention of it on the new features page raises my hopes for other cheeky additions.

Wow...this pathetic little list is what I paid my subscription fee for?

SEVEN features?!?! And that's if you count "The viewports are actually usable" as a FEATURE.

If you don't, then there are FIVE.

Blender is free....you do realize that, don't you, Frank? How is it that Blender is free and has fluids, and Max has cost me thousands over the years and I get a big $#%$ you on this capability.

PLEASE...PLEASE make a one time offer to all Max subscribers to allow them to switch their subs over to Maya at no extra cost.

Pathetic.

MAX DESIGN 2014 has only 5 of the 7 new features shown here.
This is outrageouos.

Nirsul:
AFAIK there is no difference in the amount of new features between Max 2014 and Max Design 2014

Hi Nirsul, the what's new pages for 3ds Max 2014 and 3ds Max Design 2014 highlight different features, it's not a complete list.

More details will be in the What's New section of the help file, but that's not live yet.

I would like to have a list of updated/enhanced features and not only a list of **new** features!

All the information and new announced web pages from AD is more for "new" users than for existing users

Video 5 (DX11) is returning "invalid asset path". The rest are now OK.

What about the User-voice requests.
Look at the top 3 Feature Requests: Quad chamfers, Refreshing layer manager...CAT Stretch Problems

ToKo

Posted 27 March 2013 1:36 pm

some of these Requests are started in 2010! i realy think you shit on us

jedie

Posted 27 March 2013 2:17 pm

Yes that's right! Uservoice is more a Userignore ?

Posted 27 March 2013 2:35 pm

thought there would be "Catmull Clark Subdivision Surfaces" and some mesh editing enhancements for this release.
last release you made promise about a change in UI, big change in UI, and said that nick couldn't have enough time to do it in 2013 release, and no XBR anymore? or what's going on?

Oh my. Seems to be a FAIL for everyone before it's even released. That cannot be good.
Man, when Luxology Modo and C4D put out release info, it's usually a much more positive result. I think the size and power of a company such as Autodesk, is misleading... I think everyone is spread thin over there and probably don't sell as much as one thinks... Especially considering how expensive it is compared to other packages.

The real question here... Do the plugins for 2013 work 100% or will new ones be needed?

jedie

Posted 27 March 2013 2:47 pm

big change in UI? -> the new Enhanced 'cinema 4D' Menu... lol

kellymichels

Posted 27 March 2013 3:01 pm

There are for sure more things than listed and that info will be out soon I'm sure.

Even the fanboys are turning their noses up at this release, utter FAIL.

timd1971

does the DESIGN version get "Augmented particle flow system" or not? I don't see it on the DESIGN page.

Both DESIGN and NON-DESIGN are SO similar, (99% similar) just seems ridiculous to have separate versions. unless they are going to now start having even more differences between the two to further complicate things? Who makes these ridiculous decisions?

Should just have one with all the features. (which would include Arnold renderer, naiad, forest pack pro.... yeah right).

WHOA! I am surprised by the response this blog post gets as well as the quality of some comments. Congrats to those who figured the answers for themselves! The rest, stop being grouchy! Smile more!

The new features look like good additions for vfx and visualization people. Not going to use these much but i have some friends who will be quite happy! Also it is great that max supports DX11 now!

I am looking forward to seeing max getting some attention to Viewport Canvas and one of the two character animation systems, choose either Biped or CAT, and of course, some of the most voted requests from uservoice.

Cheers! Happy Maxing Everyone!

P.S: The only blender I am thinking of is a nice mix of my favourite fruit juices with a dash of vodka!

O shut up.

Too many happy happy sunshine rays shooting out of your bum.

After reading the help file, and the new features section, it was like reading a Product Update Release Notes. Seriously!!!!

Only things that i see maybe any use, DirectX 11, maybe photo match? Maybe the vector mapping (but can do this other ways already, might just save a step?). Populate is obviously what was spent the most time on over the years. This is taking way too long.

No naiad? Buy arnold already and implement in max, maya and SI. Then limit and ruin it.

Praise the Lord, there is more after all. Thanks for the link Nirsul. I'm liking some of the changes I'm seeing. A complete list like Ken Pimentel did for Max 2013 would be greatly appreciated. These "sneak peek" and "new features" posts aren't giving the full picture of what's been worked on. Would love to see more of the popular UserVoice features get addressed.

I don't know why they don't just put out 1 version of 3d studio max then have a toggle switch to change it to the design version if that is what people want to do anyway.

it is dumb to have like 3 versions and then they have maya and softimage so you have to get those learn it and use them for somethings too since they all have their own stuff.
