Hi Jedie, just updated it!

Render farm will no longer start jobs after submitting to network render, post SP4 update.
Any help please...

We've rolled back until a solution is presented.

Hold your horses before installing this SP4 !
There seem to be a crash issue when Env/Background switcher is in the env slot and the viewport background option is set to "Use environment map"
In previous SP's the Env/BG switcher always displayed black in Nitrous, but now it goes straight to crash for me !

Posted 26 February 2014 2:41 pm

Hi Unclemonkeyman, i did some quick testing but didn't have problems. Did you install SP4 on all machines? Maybe try removing the C:\Users\use_name\AppData\Local\backburner\ in case it's related to old settings. If you're on subscription: please log a support case.

Hi Spacefrog, no crash and still looks black to me after SP4 - do you get the option to submit a CER report?

Posted 26 February 2014 4:30 pm

I'll test on a second machine - if that crashes too i'll send a CER report
BTW: I'm still on DX10 capable hardware only ( on both machines ). Could anybody who still has a NON DX11 hardware like me ( DX10 capable ) test for this specific issue ?

* install SP4
* Add Env/Background switcher to the env slot
* enable environment display in the viewports background tab
--> bammm - crash -- happens in Nitrous not in D3D mode
--> happens with the other MR related ENV map types too ...

UPDATE: To my knowledge the bug has been confirmed
I get crashes or at least a lockup on my Windows 7 machines
but it works on the one Windows 8 machine, so maybe that plays a factor too..

yup.. me to have same bug too bamm crash

Hi Unclemonkeyman, i did find one machine which had problems with Backburner: it showed "unknown error" for every task assigned to it, the issue was the Windows firewall - i disabled it for testing purposes and it started to render (probably not related to SP4 though...).

After installing SP4 on two SP3 wstations in the studio I work, 3ds max crashed everytime I tried to open the .max files (not only the last saved, tried different back numbered) from one of the two projects I'm currently involved. No way to open the project. We reverted back immediately to SP3. Annoying thing beacause I dont know in the future when I'll update the software if the files will be readable.

are you using MR and some MR extension map in the env slot ( like Env/Background switcher) ? If that is saved with the scene, the scenes would crash on load. And lord knows whatever other maps or conditions might trigger the same bug. Just be patient and wait for Autodesk to fix this issue with the current SP4 version ...

@Spacefrog: thank you very very very much. Yes, this could be the case, I'm using MR and MR bg switcher in that project. I didnt had the time at all to check this or that from version to version for trying to isolate the problem. Just thinking that an SP4 should correct bugs, and not introduce new ones... I installed the SP4 trying to correct the env map offset not showing properly in the viewports, and now there's another surprise... I dont know what product and company strategy is releasing service packs that need to wait and install other service packs and hotfixes just to keep "the car on track"... Yes I know, 3ds max is a hell of a complex software, but in the last years SPs releases are some kind of a gamble... Thank you again in the meantime

I confirm the MR Environment Background Switcher Bug as Spacefrog described it, it crashes Max. I'm on Windows 7 64 bit with DX10 Hardware. The crash triggers a CER and I provided steps to reproduce the crash. Here is also a link to an area thread I started.

Posted 3 March 2014 11:06 pm

I also got a crash with the background switch issue.

Also... I can't run BB Server off my workstation anymore. Looks like I will not be applying the SP on my dedicated render machines... But seeing as how my workstation is the my powerful machine by far, that's a big loss not being able to have it do rendering jobs.

Based on your feedback we've taken down SP4 and are investigating the environment map issue.

I get the same error also, then CER:
An error has occurred and the application will now ffffrucking close.
Do you want to attempt to save a copy of the current scene and overwrite a possibly good file stupida$$?
