Hotfix 2 for 3ds Max 2012 and 3ds Max Design 2012 is now live:

What’s Fixed?
The following table lists problems with 3ds Max 2012 / 3ds Max Design 2012 that have been fixed in Hot Fix 2.

Feature Description
CAT • In the Capture Animation dialog, clicking Auto Map multiple times would cause a MAXScript error. This has been fixed.
• In the Capture Animation dialog, importing MotionBuilder (FBX) files would cause a MAXScript error. This has been fixed.
• The base spine bone now translates correctly.
• Animating function curves while working with motion layers would cause a program error. This has been fixed.
MAXScript • An initialRollupState Type error has been fixed.
• The Return statement now properly migrates the return value to the heap.
Modeling • In a wireframe view, editing sub-objects would cause geometry to display at an offset from the parent geometry. This has been fixed.
Point Helpers • Point Helpers can have modifiers assigned to them once more.
Slate Material Editor • In some cases, opening Slate would cause a program error. This has been fixed.
XRef Scene • XRef Scene would disregard the Layer visibility flag. This has been fixed.

This hotfix also addresses an issue where selecting the DigitCurlAngle, DigitSpreadAngle, or DigitRollAngle in the CATMotion editor could cause 3ds Max to crash. CATMotion layers created in SP1 may still cause the crash, but you can save the animation as a preset, create a new CATMotion layer, load the preset, and actually use the Digit*Angle controls!

Thanks for the fixes!

Does this hotfix include all fixes of SP1?

Great...keep 'em coming! These fixes don't affect my workflow, but good job MAX team!

Good to hear about those CAT fingers. Just happened to stumble upon exactly this crash.
And thanks to kaleden for tip. Wasn't aware of workaround. Just what I might need in next days.

@sandykoufax

prob not... it's a HF...not a SP rollup.

Best to install in order of release... but I think SP1 has HF1 rolled up in it. But personally I do them in order.

i.e. HF1, then SP1 then HF2... followed by trying 3ds max, then rebooting each time.

techincally if HF1 is rolled into SP1, then just SP1 then HF2.

The info i got is that this hotfix does contain all previous fixes ( including SP ), so a sequential install of the previous fixes /SP should not be necessary. Needless to say it would'nt cause any trouble doing so nevertheless...

@nildo and ShrifAzmy

i don;t think Autodesk is really trying to push us to Maya in this way... but I do think if I was in Character Animation field 100%, I would def be using Maya Or even maybe SI?)...not max. max almost seems best for the arch/viz side... not that it can't do all..but seems more so... kinda the field I am am...but more VIZ.

yeah...best to know both really.

I guess they forgot(or have not noticed) the fact that FG map does not save if you network render over net work. It calculates the FG map but does not save it....so you have to waste time doing FG/GI local.
