You can instance them, have direct editing access to the containers content if needed - and of course you have a low res proxy option... not bad at all...

And containers seems like a good method...
But there are too many bugs appears as you start integrate containers into pipeline. Unable to switch hide/show selected containers in container explorer. If container deleted or some undo actions - they may change position e.t.c. So they became one of many glitchy innovations of 3ds max since 2009 and earlier. You know they exist, but can't use in production (
