Virtual Production Events/Sessions
Opening
The Virtual Production track at FMX 2012 is curated by a team from Autodesk, the 5D Institute, the Previsualization Society, the Virtual Production Committee, and Weta Digital. In this opening session the curators will share the current thinking on virtual production from the point of view of their respective organization, and they will set the stage for the 16 presentations focused on Virtual Production that will take place over the next 3-days. It is a roadmap for the track that you don’t want to miss.
World Building
First, the world has to be built. World Building is the new metaphor for the design, creation and actualizing of the story space in digital narrative media. Curated by the 5D Institute, this first segment of the Virtual Production track addresses narrative design thinking, the iterative and immersive experience of creating new worlds for storytelling in general, and virtual production in particular. Through World Building, production designers express the full arc of design’s role through narrative media.
Sessions:
- Upside Down - Worldbuilding for Independent movies
- Design for Virtual Production: Avatar, Tintin and beyond.
Previsualization
What will you do in the world once it is built? Previsualization is the collaborative process that generates preliminary versions of shots or sequences, predominantly using 3D animation tools and a virtual environment. It enables filmmakers to visually explore creative ideas, plan technical solutions, and communicate a shared vision for efficient production. Curated by the Previsualisation Society, this segment of the Virtual Production track presents some of the most recent uses of Previs in moviemaking, an essential step in a full-fledged virtual production workflow.
Sessions:
- Previsualization - "The Last Stand"
- World Building & Previsualization - Featuring “War Horse”
- "Total Recall"
Core Sessions
In this core segment of the Virtual Production track, we follow key practitioners in the field as they present how virtual production is used in Television, Games and Animation. We discuss the convergence of Animation with Live Action and what this means for actors and animators. And we are presented with a detailed overview of roles and responsibilities on state of the art virtual production stages today.
Sessions:
- Virtual Production in Television
- Virtual Production in Games
- Virtual Production in Animation
- Animation converges with Live Action
- System Engineering for Virtual Production
Megasessions
Come walk with us on the leading edge of motion picture art & science, and learn from the creative pioneers who are inventing a new medium. The Virtual Production Megasessions are focused on the latest blockbuster virtual productions and the teams that make them. Enjoy presentations on the virtual production of Tintin, Real Steel, Hugo and many others, by independent creators, producers and experts from Weta Digital, Digital Domain and LucasFilm.
Sessions:
- The Virtual Production of Tintin
- The Virtual Production of Real Steel
- The Virtual Production of Hugo
- Virtual Production at LucasFilm
Wrap-up
In this final session of the Virtual Production track we take stock of the presentations we saw over the last three days, gather our thoughts and turn our attention toward the road ahead. Join our panel of luminaries as we consider the place of virtual production in the future of moviemaking, in context of other important developments in the field, such as 3D and high frame rate photography.
