Hi,

I noticed that the OpenEXR extra Channels aren’t rendered over Backburner (UV, Z depth, Object/Material Node ID). It seams to be a configuration problem with the EXR preferences, these not being given over to the Backburner Slaves. I noticed a similar flaw with other picture formats (settings not being used with Backburner). Only TGA and JPEG seams to work perfectly. This is not a joke, 3ds Max practically doesn’t support Multichannel EXR export. I tried Mental Ray and Vray.
It’s the same since you introduced OpenEXR import/export in 3ds Max. In the past I rely on Render Elements, but functional Multichannel EXR are really cool and simplify a lot of my compositing work. Being able to export every render Element the actual renderer offer would be another long awaited extremely useful feature.

I am using 3ds Max 2009 64bit with all Service Packs and Extensions on Vista Ultimate 64bit. The problem was also existent with 3dsmax 2008 32/64 on WinXP 64.

I’ve tried it with EXR files on Backburner and get the same result, the extra channels are missing.
It works OK with RPF files.

RPF is working, I know, but my eyeon Fusion doesn’t understands RPF.
Forcing people to use Autodesk products like Combustion or Toxic by sluggish implementation of an widely used open file format isn’t the best way to please your customers.

You sure? I used Fusion to test the renders when I tried this.
Which Fusion is it? I have version 5.

Hey guys

For saving 3dsmax render elements to multichannel exr, you may want to check out our latest free tool release, SlideElements (part of SlideShaders).

I saw it, but the main problem is that it’s a Mental Ray shader and we are using mostly VRay.

If you are using Vray, you can render out to vrimg format and script the channel extraction for your compositing -

Has anyone found a fix for this problem???  I looked on the Autodesk support site and found 0 results on anything related to OpenEXR or EXR!  This is a known Max problem...why are there no fixes for it?!?!?!  Not looking for a plugin to solve a software bug…
