Shift-click is not cloning - (this bug exists since Max 2008 )
you actually have to translate the object to trigger the clone operation.
prior to Max 2008 shift-click on an object triggered the clone operation.

I’ve simple started using the right-click/clone from the menu.  Now I don’t think twice about it.

I just use CTRL V now, I don’t even think about Shift-Click any more.

I liked it a lot… but yes you can use a shortcut to bring up the clone tool…
