Hi,

I have a question about MR Final Gather Reuse procedure.

I’ve tested some animation test with reference to help file of max design 2010

There are 3 movie clip.

clip1 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvZR6OYDYWE
clip2 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diWrAm7XznQ
clip3 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWg9HneJ1BA

but these movie is not good to see the problem.

In the attached file, there are clip2 and clip3,

And the all clips are here
http://rapidshare.com/files/222290632/mentalraytest.rar
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My test process is below ;

common setting : 0~50 frame animation

enabled diagnostics : final gather

final gather preset : draft mode

--------------------------------------------
clip 1 setting : Project FG Points From Camera Position (Best for Stills)
Reuse mode : single file only + Off (map)

clip 1 step : hit the render

-----------------------------------------------
clip 2 setting : Project Points from Positions Along Camera Path ( seg : 9 )
Reuse mode : single file only

clip 2 step : 1) set Final Gather Map to Incrementally Add FG Points to Map Files
2) Generate Final Gather Map File Now (from 0~50, every 5 frames)
3) changed to Read FG Points Only from Existing Map Files
4) hit the render

----------------------------------------------
clip 3 setting : Project Points from Positions Along Camera Path ( seg : 9 )
Reuse mode : One File Per Frame

clip 3 step : 1) set Final Gather Map to Incrementally Add FG Points to Map Files
2) Generate Final Gather Map File Now (from 0~50)
3) changed to Read FG Points Only from Existing Map Files ( interpolate : 2 )
4) hit the render

--------------------------------------------
Now you can see what’s the problem of my movies.

In clip1, you can see the normal fg points in the whole area.

But in 2nd and 3rd, u cannot see the final gather points at the left side. Only seen the right half area.

How can I do that correctly ?

Hi,

please check my file.

When I rendered it, I have a problem as I said already.

But If I add only keyframe to my camera, final gather maps are good.

I don’t know this is a bug or not.

But please tell me the reason of this.

:)

I have the same problem here.

Basically, if You do a “one file per frame” animation/fgm render, max creates a .fgm sequence (name####.fgm).
Then, if You turn on “Read FG points only”, max tries to read the file: name.fgm , NOT the sequence!

So if I hit render, (please follow the steps in the max help “Reuse (FG and GI Caching) Rollout (mental ray Renderer)”, it doesn’t work either) I get a render without the FG solution.

I can select manually any of the calculated name####.fgm files, and then THAT solution renders independently from the actually rendered frame.

Any solution to that?
(I have keyed the camera)

Cheers!

I just did some quick tests.  If you render a single frame then it doesn’t use the FG maps you created.  If you render to a Range then it works fine for me.

But back to the OP and his posted file.  Using the Project Points from Positions along Camera Path should NOT be used with multiple FG map files.  I understand that Max’s help isn’t entirely clear as to how all the new settings get used, and it took me a while to really get a handle on it.

Hi,

max needs a single FG map file that is named exactly like your FG Sequence but without the “####”.
So if your sequence files are named “camA####.fgm” you must also have a “camA.fgm” in the directory where the sequence is. It is usualy created automaticaly when you do test renderings.

So far i didn’t have any problems with “project points along camera path” and multiple fg maps…

Hope this helps
Arek
