Hello fellow Area members,
Thanks to feedback from key Revit>3ds Max users, it has come to my attention that there’s a small difference between the Autodesk Architecture preset included in FBX plug-in version 2009.3 and the same named preset in FBX plug-in versions 2009.1 and 2009.0 for 3ds Max. In our latest 2009.3 release, an option to re-evaluate smoothing groups was enabled. This option should not be enabled by default. This may cause faceting issues of geometry importing into 3ds Max from Revit. What the option does, to clarify, is simply generate smoothing groups when none are indicated in the FBX file. This can be time-consuming and so Revit imports can take even longer than normal with this option activated. Again, this option should have been disabled and it was our error to have activated it in our latest release for 3ds Max and 3ds Max Design.
How can you correct this? Very easily, thankfully. You can either just grab the preset that contains the modification, here in this thread, or make the modification yourselves. How? Choose FILE>IMPORT… in the 3ds Max main menu toolbar and choose the Revit FBX file you wish to import. When the FBX Importer dialog opens, choose EDIT...>EDIT PRESET at the bottom left of the dialog. Choose OK in the pop-up dialog and navigate to IMPORT>INCLUDE>GEOMETRY>RE-EVALUATE SMOOTHING GROUPS in the left part of the window. Uncheck the option in the corresponding right side of the window. Click EDIT...>SAVE PRESET to save the preset to a specific name. Click OK. The files from Revit should now import relatively quicker and have no smoothing group faceting issues you may have encountered with this latest release.
Our next release this Spring will contain the modified Revit Architecture preset.
I hope this helps some users out there and please share this post within any other relevant forums.
Have a great weekend, folks.
