Also, I hate to point this out, and I definitely don’t want to start any fights, but read this:
http://area.autodesk.com/for...el-thread-closed/Page-10/
Notice how he didn’t listen when he was getting free valuble advice from proffesionals in that field (Not implying that I am a proffesional in ANY way).  Get what I’m saying?  I can’t strees enough how important it is to practice and spend time on one scene.  So just try it.  Also, try modeling something a couple times in a row, because practice makes perfect.  There are also a billion tutorials out there, and many on this site.  It looks like you are just going your own way, when you could be learning from pros.  Trust me, they help.  They show workflows and techniques you probably never even knew about.  Please listen to me.  Again, I am not trying to start an argument, but I just see a lot of potential.  Keep up the good work.

Funny how I came across this :)

No seriously Longboarder is 100% right, follow other people’s advice it is KEY. You will never learn, even if you are too lazy to try other options try ‘em and you’ll learn.

Just clear a slot, and choose to only delete the material in the slot not in the scene, then if you ever need to edit the material use the eyedropper tool and choose the model with the texture applied to activate it in the material editor.

Perhaps you might save yourself a lot of time and effort by using the help built into Max? (see image)
Depending on your Max version you help may be slightly different - this is why you should put your Max version (and brief system specs) in your sig.

Quite how you managed to miss the many threads on this site alone regarding the editor slots is beyond me.
