Hope I dont get in trouble for asking this (people dont like comparison questions about 3D programs) BUT I have the Maya 2011 demo and C4 R12 demo. Working with both. Both have stunning features that make them unique. Both are expensive of course so I want to make sure I make the right decision. Here are some things I have noticed ...

1. C4D seems to RENDER much much faster than Maya. I wonder if this is correct or is it just me not doing something right. Quality seems better in C4D I think.

2. Mayas special effects ... OCEANS, FIRE, PHYSICS, etc etc are so easy and fun in Maya, seem harder and more complicated in C4D.

3. Maya works so well with MotionBuilder, C4D works so well with Poser.

anyway, any comments from any users who use both programs would be appreciated. As I mention I know that it is not popular to as comparison problems but when one is trying to decide on a major 3D program it is an important consideration.

I have owned both. I really like both. I did sell my C4D R10 license because I needed $$$, so I use Maya exclusively now. But I can only say good things about C4D.

Maya, however, is just sheer power. That is why it is the industry workhorse and standard, especially for FX and 3D animated features. Plus, with Maya, you get Fluid simulation and PaintEffects as well. For motion graphics (like broadcast animation), C4D is the best 3D app out there…

Plus with C4D you get BodyPaint, which is very powerful… However, you *can* “paint” and “sculpt” in Maya in a limited fashion…

I have to admit: C4D *feels* more solid, in some instances, but really, I haven’t had very many problems with Maya, either. Maya’s node-based engine and MEL scripting language mean just about infinite capabilities in the hands of pros. Which is why most major studios use it.

I don’t think you could go wrong either way.  If it were a toss-up, however, and I had to choose: I personally would go with Maya.
