Not working for me either, but it is the correct address - I set it up in mIRC when the service was introduced and I’ve not changed the settings.

Real-time “chat” I suppose would be the major benefit. Instant responses rather than having to wail for an email to tell you to login and check a thread. it’s certainly more interactive.
That would be fine if it was “discussion led”, but I suspect it [is | will be] used to try and get instant answers to problems which is why I don’t use it much.
