Hello All, Just been looking at some articals about the new 3D tv by philips and noticed that they had an example of some live action and next to it its depthMap pass.

I understand what zdepth passes are but what I’m not sure about is how you get that information from live action. Do they use some special camera? or some funky software to calculate the depth? Anyone know any good links to how this stuff works?

Cheers

Dan

A little late, but maybe someone’s still interested :)
A few month ago, I attended a seminar from a guy from Sony Pictures Imageworks. He talked about stereoscopy and such and one thing he showed us was a research on how to get depth information from live action footage. He had a shot where the camera moved upwards. Now he had a programm that analysed the movement of the pixels in the footage. For example there were trees in the foreground and a house in the background. The trees “moved” faster and the house slower. The programm calculated the distance to the objects using this “movement”. Then he even could create a second camera and got himself a stereoscopic scene. Of course it didn’t look perfect, as it was still a work in progress.
I hope you understand what I’m trying to explain, as I’m not a native speaker :)
