greetings all, long tyme no see..

well I have some questions and I was hopin yall could help me answer them…

I want to get involved in IT/IS and have a fun filled meaningfull career, i.e. a J O B that I don’t hate.. I know I want to work with computers and am lookin deeply into the whole IT/IS world but d*m the more and more I look into it.. I realize that its, ITS own world.. where to begin, how do you decide what to get involved with? Theres system administration, database and programming(which I dn’t want to do), web development and then theres 3D modeling/animation(of which in my limited knowledge would be my dream job!!) ect, ect.

1. How and where to begin on this? any and all pointers appreciated!! Currently I am just a sponge, doing google searches and reading up, but mainly have been at the library night and day(like right now!!) and just been reading all sorts of books and such on the subject.. right now FLASH and Autodesk Maya are really lookin awesome!! read: something I would like to do.. either making “cool” websites or such stuff or making awesome movies or shorts like Surf’s Up, ect, ect…

If any of you in here work in IT/IS, it would be awesome if you could post about it..

1. what you do

2. how you got where your at.. personal develpment or college? ect, ect..

3. how much you make, aprox is cool, Gives me/us a rough idea of the reality of life, a LIFE CHECK if you may..ect, ect

4. uh… anything else I missed and that you wouldn’t mind sharing?

again my goal with this post is twofold..

one find out who works in IT/IS and to what extent..what they do and how they like it and got there..

two, get some d*m good pointers to get my own a$$ started and one day workin in this awesome field…

Please be a bit more specific as to what you would want from the whole IT world.  As you already mentioned there are a couple of different “flavours” to choose from.
(1) do you want to administrate computers & servers and do back-end support
(2) do you want to do helpdesk / customer assistance (front-end)
(3) do you want to develop web applications
(4) do you want to develop web pages / sites

not necessarily IT related jobs:
(5) do you want to develop graphical images for the web / print (think of photoshop / flash)
(6) do you want to develop graphical 3D imagery for gaming software or other purposes

as I list above, there are quite some choices to be made.  Remember:  take your time to decide what you acually want to achieve in life.  Maybe you won’t get there in a straight line, but eventually you will achieve your goal.

For choices 1-4 you would need to learn a lot about computers and programming.  For choices 5 and 6 you can let your creativity be the guide to your destination and of course some training wouldn’t harm :-)

I myself started out as a school teacher, got bored of that, went into the IT and became a system administrator.  Pay was ok ($2000 excl. taxes and so forth).  Now adays I do reverse enginering with 3D applications like Maya.  10 years ago I could never imagine I would be doing what I am doing today.  So live is always a big mystery.  As long as you’re having fun :-)

HOLY MAC!! i mean HOLY smokes! thats the exact kind of answer i need..

my dream job would be options 5 or 6, i.e. makin movies like Surf’s Up or working on a video game using Maya.. but I know that won’t come easy or FASt..

but with you listing options 1-4, see thats my whole problem..  I love everything tech and thats why I don’t know HOW or where to begin.. I love and would WANT do do all options listed 1-4.. but shoot I just want to start somewhere.. and thats my issue.. since I LOVE ALL things tech.. I don’t know how or where to begin…

You really need to set your sights on one direction and one goal and start going in that direction.  You have listed two:

Those are completely different fields. 
For items 5 & 6, take art/drawing/graphics classes.
For items 1-4, you need to take software development classes, or classes such as:
