| Hotmail and Gmail not working
|
|
|
This is in the off topic section...and this thread has nothing to do with Autodesk.
I have poseted this issue on a couple of “online-help” forums and researched for a solution, But no use.
From 3 days ago, my Hotmail and Gmail do not work. When i sign-in to them either directly from my browser (http://www.hotmail.com or http://www.gmail.com), or through their instant messaging application (Google Talk and Messenger), simply nothing happens, they do not load! I tried to reboot my router, my pc, but nothing helped. This is not only to me, but also to all the other computers in my house, but all the other people i know have their Gmail and Hotmail work...EXCEPT ME!!
And the same applies to Facebook.
Please help!

Curious that it seems to be just you, though that depends on where your friends are located.
I just googled “dubai gmail problem” and it seems this problem occurs occasionally, but nothing recent.
There are so many things which could cause this - bad DNS, HOSTS files, firewall/av, maybe even a virus.
Open a Command prompt and type “tracert gmail.com” (without the quotes) and press enter. Result should begin with something like
“Tracing route to gmail.com [74.125.230.149]” (the IP might be different).
If the result is “Unable to resolve target system name” then it’s likely a DNS issue
if the resulting IP is “127.0.0.1” then it’s probably a HOSTS entry, or a firewall/av intercepting the DNS requests.
Beyond that it will be difficult to track down the cause. If you have a Laptop (or similar portable PC) then you could try that @ home (to ensure it doesn’t work) then take it to a friend’s house and try it there. If it works there then it’s something to do with your modem/router. If it doesn’t work there but your friend’s systems do, then it’s a PC problem. If neither work then it’s probably outside your control.

i typed that in the “Run” box, and the result was exactly :
“Tracing route to gmail.com [74.125.230.118]”
this means it is supposed to be running normally right?? Then it might be a virus, although that is unlikely to happen since i don’t open untrusted websites that may contain viruses.
Do you think replacing the router might solve this issue?

Well - it proves that it’s neither a DNS (or more accurately the DNS server to which you connect in order to resolve domain names) or a HOSTS issue, could still be a f/w or av issue, or worse…
When you ran the tracert, was the very last line the same IP as that first one?
It could be your router - is it a separate device or part of the modem? Cable connections often have them separate (mine is), ADSL ones are often combined, but neither of those are absolutes.
Try a similar thing again, but replace “tracert” with “ping” - if you get high numbers then your connection is not good and it’s possible you are timing out rather that failing to connect at all. The problem may not be your system, but between your system and your ISP or between them and the ‘net at large.

Sorry for the long time for me to reply...and thanks for your reply.
But miraculously, after shutting off my router for 12 hours, Everything worked normally again.
I guess my router was just mad and needed a good night sleep, since i almost NEVER shut it off lol...so that might be the issue…
anyway, thanks a lot; i learnt somthing new to type in the run box :P

Routers can “fill up” with connections over time so the occasional reboot is not a bad idea. Glad it’s all sorted anyway.
