subs have risen 27% in the u.k from about a year or so back.

in regards not renewing...you don’t lose the use of 3dsmax your just ‘stuck’ at the last version your subs carried, so stopping subscription does not mean stopping using 3dsmax at all just to be clear for those who are considering such a move.

i do have to say it’s a balance of bugs VS new capabilities, i’m still using max 2008 for my projects..i have max 2009 installed but don’t use it and have yet to bother to install max 2010.

i seem to ‘use’ a 3dsmax that’s maybe 1 or 2 version behind as they have the time to get bug fixed/hot fixes to make them stable.

all i read of max2010 is bugs and annoyances so havn’t bothered to install it as yet..once i start to hear it’s okay i’ll try it out.

i’tll be intersting to see what appears in max2011 if it’s not HUGE i might stay on max 2011 and start to migarate to blender 2.5 also i’m keeping an eye on newtek’s CORE app but it’s still in development and won’t be production ready for 1-3 years.

i like 3dsmax but could probably ‘do’ everything i need in version 9 or 2008 so i’m not too concerned if i pulled out of subs...Autodesk need to demonstrate that they can invent stuff and not just tack on plugins in each release.

Right, it’s the “stuck” that looms as the reason I would rather upgrade.
I must admit it seems 2010 was no inspiration to me, and really don’t expect 2011 to be much better,
just don’t want to have to move to another package for this work.
Guess I may eventually have to consider it if I am going to continue.
My subscription runs out this week, so it’s down to the wire.
One thing I think about is not only a features list for Max but also operating system compatibility for the future.
Eventually, an older Max may not work on a future OS.

Here, Max 7 is the first version, going backwards, which exhibits any issues on XP64. It won’t “die” when you close it, it stays in the Task Manager. Other than that it works fine.

Max 2008 gave me a few, though not many, problems on Win2K, Max2009 was the 1st version which would not install on 2K which is what forced me, kicking and screaming, into buying XP.

Seeing as you have 2010 on Vista I would expect you to have a few years and/or releases before you start to run into any problems.

Max 4.2 through 2012 (SP2+SAP).
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

True, but then it’s back to square one with Max,
their new policy doesn’t allow for but a couple of versions and a full version must then again be purchased
(if I remember correctly after seeing a PDF, forgotten the link).
Without looking over what I wrote in any previous post I don’t really want to let the sub lapse,
it will give me yet another year to consider.
I already called the reseller with my credit card last week and thought it was
settled but got a message on my machine stating they didn’t take that brand of credit card
(would have been nice to have known that at the time),
so with the weekend and holiday (here in the US) I will have to contact them again tomorrow if I follow through.

:)

I also considered and opted out of the latest renewal for max. I like it better when there’s just a “reasonable” upgrade price, and maybe a comfortable, tiered pricing scheme for older versions. It feels like being trapped into either upgrading whether you really want to or not, with the other option being to have a “penalty” for not renewing.

i think everyone is wondering about subs on 3dsmax…

i’m still running 3dsmax2008 mostly...i have 2009 installed on a tablet pc but havn’t gotten around to 2010 as most people here think it’s just a bunch of bugs waiting to bite you!
....has that changed?
is it now worth installing max2010?

i’m still on subs...my thoughts are a wait n see approach to what max2011 is like and then make a choice to either stay onboard or dump subs and stick with what i already have which would be max2011 by then.

i also have lightwave 9.6 and i’m on the beta of CORE..that may come out as an option to change over to that or if that flops i might just take a good long look at blender2.5 in 2010 as well!

the thing nowdays is there are still plenty of options out there including sticking whith what you have.
