So I am going to start doing some 3D modeling freelance work. I know Maya a whole lot better than 3ds Max but not sure which one would be best. Any advice on which one I should get?

Get the one you are better at!  They both do the same thing…

"Better” is a very relative term.
As Longboarder1 mentioned, try the 30 day demos of Max and Maya and see which you like better:
