Go into your user profile, your irc ‘nick’ is as the bottom of the page. To log onto the irc server you need that name and the same password you use for these forums.
To answer the original question…
Few people even know about it because the original announcement on the Home page has long since scrolled off.
There will be some who know it exists, but not what IRC even is.
Most here are professional users - most companies block things like IRC and other instant messaging services.
For those of us who do know it exists and are able to access it, it tends to turn very quickly into an online support session - at least with the forum we can take the time to look at a problem and reply accordingly in our own time. Being put “on the spot” to answer questions immediately is not fun believe me. As a consequence of all the above there are very few users.
