Hey guys, I probably have posted too much in the off topic forum about computers :). This might be my last question.
For 3ds Max rendering does the Quadro FX 4600 have a huge performance gain over the 8800 GTX, (since they are almost the same card),
I really need to know, because the Quadro FX 4600 costs about $1,500 more, and for that much, it has to be a pretty big performance gain.
So if anyone knows about these cards please post all the info you know about them, and also if you know, Why is the Quadro FX 4600 $1,500 more! Because using a 8800 GTX instead of the Quadro FX 4600 is a difference of $4,000 and $5,000.

If you use only Max, buying Quadro is wasting your money. Max uses DirectX, so you won’t notice any difference between Quadro and Geforce (Quadro FX4600 = professional version of Geforce 8800GTX). In my opinion, you shouldn’t buy Quadro…

I would be carefull in making this decision.  You can look at the supported cards from autodesk (here is the link).

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=10032262

Since there are so many cards, Autodesk is only going to test a certain group.  If the card you pick is not in that group, you could run into all sorts of problems.  At the same time, you don’t want to buy a card that doesn’t do anything for you.  It is not just performance but stability that you want.

And of course, I hope you’re referring to using the card for general use, not rendering, because the video card does nothing there. Sorry if you know this already, I just wasn’t sure. :)

Yes I do know:) Thanks for responding to the post. I just doubted myself a little because the nVidia salesmen, told me that the Quadro cards are better used for rendering 3d. And before he told me this, knowing that graphic cards have nothing to do with rendering was ancient history to me, but he made me a little confused.:)

He could be thinking of Gelato which is a hardware accelerated renderer created by Nvidia. Still, not worth getting a quadro over a top end gaming card for max.

Thanks guys for all replies, yes I have decided to forget the Quadros, and go with a 9800 GTX:)

Better wait for just a little, next gen cards are around the corner (based on nvidia gt200 & ati rv770 which is already in production).

Im use quadro 1400 and geforce 7900 GTX and last geforce 8800 GT
my tests in max 2009:

all settings the same:

driver 180.48 geforce 8800 GT - loop animation
2 default lights
dx 27 - 37 fps
dx 119 - 136 fps - cached
ogl 11 - 17 fps

quadro 1400 - driver 162.65
2 lights
dx 25 - 36 fps
dx cached 140 - 163 fps
ogl 15 - 22 fps
maxtreme cached 209 fps
maxtreme od 23 do 33 fps

Quadro 1400 is a lowend graphics card.
