Questionnaire

I am a third year BSc (Hons) Computer Animation student currently studying at the University of Portsmouth. I am creating an artefact based dissertation project that will be investigating what is required to become a professional 3D animator. Only answer the questions you feel are relevant?

1. What animations are in your show reel?

2. The artefact that I am going to create will be a collection of character and creature animations. What else do I need to show that I can animate?

3. Do I need to show that I can animate in different styles?

4. Do I need to develop skills in acting? How do I show this in my work?

5. What pipeline do you have for completing an animation?

6. How do you plan out an animation? Do you use a dope sheet?

7. Is it beneficial to have a good knowledge of skinning and rigging? If so to what degree?

8. Do I need to demonstrate that I have a strong understating of the twelve principles of animation as well as other fundamentals?

9. Do I need to show I have a good understanding of human and animal anatomy?

10. The software that I will be using for this project is Maya and Softimage. Do I need to have an extensive knowledge of the software?

11. If possible can you state who you work for or have previously worked with?

Would you also be able to state any other information that you feel would be of use in answering my research question below. Thank you kindly for your time.

Lukasaurus,

I have been in business for almost 20 years now, before that 3D was just a hobby. I have graduated at tecnical college mechanical engineering department. 3D-visualization and animation I have learned by myself; no education in that field att all. I think it’s not necessary to be mr. know it all on animation software. Just learn the features You would need in each project. I still need to do that by myself. If You have story to tell animation software is just a tool to do that - nothing else.

I was in Siggraph -97 in L.A. and I was very disappointed. It looked like a competition who could explode- or rip heads of animated characters using different techniques. It looked like everybody in business were mentally ill. Fortunately my customers are not looking for head exploders, but rather people who understand tecnical documentation and can simplify their system in a way their old grand parents would understand what they are selling after seeing my animation. I hope this answer partially Your question.
