I’ve written tutorials for the Area. When I wrote these tutorials I assumed they would be left on the Area. But through a Google search I found both of my reflections tutorials on en.9jcg.com . I tried e-mailing the website using the two e-mail addresses I found but had no response. I posted a coment at the bottom of my own tutorial saying they were taken from another website but later that week they were deleted with no response! I’ve also posted a post concerning this matter here, but didn’t get very far. To my knowledge the owner of the site Richard Yang (I’m not sure if that’s his name, but that’s all I could gather) must have an Area account because how else could he have gotten the tutorials off the Area. In my personal opinion he should have his Area account permanently removed. There are a lot of other tutorials on that site which I have seen on the Area. My question is Are these tutorials yours and has anyone else had problems with this site? Also has anyone else had a problem with people stealing tutorials and images or even animations. Really just how common is it for people to steal stuff off the internet? I hope some people comment on this because I’d really like the information.
PS
I also found he submitted my tutorials to tutorialized.com and his code name is mayafishing1. I couldn’t find it in the Area’s memory list, though.

Once again hoping for response.

Why do you care? tutorials should be made for all to see! as long as proper credit is given where credit is due, get over it!

The reality: expect anything you post on the internet to be stolen, or at least privateered for some other use than you originally intended. It’s unfortunate this happened to you without first being consulted, but so long as you are being given proper credit I wouldn’t worry too much; provided of course they are not claiming it to be “theirs”, or are attempting to use your work for some commercial purpose.

This is definitely not acceptable, but unfortunately it happens a lot. I always wonder how tutorialized.com got so many 3ds Max tutorials…
I have never had a problem with this, but I have witnessed it a couple times, a member once posted an image on the TheArea, and in his username was his name.
I then went to a 3d website, and in the gallery was this image that this man posted. There names weren’t the same, nor even similar, and the image was created with maya, while this man said he worked in Max.

Even if I’m getting the proper “recognition” I don’t want to be affiliated with his website. When he submitted my tutorial to Tutorialized, it was submitted in his name.I wouldn’t have minded so much if he had at least responded to my E-mails. I know the whole point about tutorials is so people can read them, but what’s so wrong about being able to read them on the Area?

Unfortunately getting any resolution on these types of internet issues rarely happens. Suggestions to protect yourself in the future if you are not already doing so: place watermarks across all your images that indicate a copyright symbol, the year it was created and a name or identifying mark that is uniquely yours. Also I would place a small blurb at the very beginning and end outlining what amounts to a license agreement with regards to use and redistribution of your work. Even so guys like that will still steal your stuff, so at the end of the day the only sure way to not get screwed is to not post anything. I suggest picking up a copy of “Legal Guide for the Visual Artist”. It has a lot good info about these types of issues facing artists.

Thanks for the response.I like the idea about having the license agreement on top of the tut. But I had already thought of water marking the images. But still can anybody tell me if the rest of the tuts on the site are stolen from here or elsewhere??.

Stuffed,
I concur with your reaction. You are the creator and therefore until you relinquish your rights, you own the copyrights on the tutorials.
The proper course of action for Skymedia would have been to pre-contact you and request permission to use your tutorials. This was not done. The other issue is his site contains advertisements for which compensation is paid. The use of your property for the financial gain of others is not acceptable. Consider the Napster case and final decision. No, they were not “selling” the music, just providing a service. Providing the service generated revenue through advertisements. The argument goes: without the use of copyrighted music, there would be no service and therefore no revenue. The revenue was dependent upon the use of copyrighted material and therefore subject to the copyright laws.
Unfortunately this type of activity is rampant on the internet. I give away a ton of stuff to the AREA. Yes, Autodesk benefits and hopefully the 3D community does as well. But posting here is my decision. I too would not be a happy camper if I found someone posting my work on their site without my permission.
As far as I can tell, both of your tutorials have been pulled.

Thanks to the Area, my tutorials are completely off Skymedias :) . I’m glad this post worked. It was quite frustrating for me. I’m aware of the fact that he was making money off the ads on his site.
