First of all let me give a lil background. I am 23 (24 in march). Did a full MAYA training class (approved by Autodesk) and know my way around the program VERY well. Not much experience in terms of hours spent on it but I am fixing this on this last quarter of the year since I will be doing nothing but mess around on MAYA for the next 4 months ¬¬ Will end up with a nice portfolio (already got some stuff, but need more complete / less study ones) and the experience I lack. Also have 2 briefings for shot movies, including sketches and some very raw storyboards witch I plan to develop in this time span.

I will be also getting started on Zbrush (or Mudbox, if you guys would like to give an opinion in this matter I won’t complain, but its beyond the purpose of this topic) and already got a few Digital Tutors packs to get me started.

The thing is, I did a superior graduate back in 2006 (2.5 years long) for Digital Design which gave me some background on History of Art / Computer / Design, legal issues related to design jobs, etc. Some valuable experience with college works and such… BUT I am after a superior curse now focused ONLY on 3D digital art. Currently my focus is animation / modeling… realistic CG really doesn’t appeal to me that much. I did some virtual houses a few times and I honestly spent more time tweaking the scene, either on the isolated shadder / illumination and pos-prod. on photoshop then doing what I like in MAYA (which is modeling / rigging / texturing <this last one I lack the skills but I plan to work on that ;p>).

What I need most from this course is basic DRAWING skills. I am not completely illiterate on the subject, but I need some advanced classes on this regard If I plan to be a competent storyboarder and understand what the artists mean with their drawings (which will be necessary AT THE VERY LEAST for blend shapes from my toons). Other than that all I really need is an all around curse that will walk me trough professional workflow and such, which will allow me to get into the market once I am done. I wouldn’t mind either re-visiting more “academic” chairs like art and design… I already have some background on those subjects but more is always better specially since I am not that good on those to begin with.

--------------

My first thought was VFS (Vancouver Film School) in Canada (duh ^^), I heard nice things about it and living 1 year in Canada will be mind blowing for sum one of my age :D /// BUT I really know very little about the good learning centers around the world so I decided to stop by and ask for you guys for recommendations… better if they are near good job opportunities but not mandatory, I surely won’t mind working as bartender or the likes for the duration of the course if that is what it will take to pay the bills while I can’t get a proper job on the area ¬¬

Thanks all for the help.

The Gnomon School of VFX, is renowned and is in Hollywood, which means you’ll have to move to the U.S. (California State), for however long.

They offer many individual courses, most 10 weeks long, and each course is around $1675, if you really want a career, then maybe you can take there 21 month program, which trains on every aspect of Maya, and goes into BodyPaint 3D, ZBrush, and Compositing (with Shake I believe). The only problem is it costs $45,500.

Hope this Helps
