I haven’t had a chance to get 2012 running yet (waiting for updated network license) and one of the questions really tugging at me is about CAT… Have they fixed any of the CAT bugs? CATMotion freeze? Bones flying off into Timbucktoo...? The others?

I spent many hours using CAT yesterday, I had far too many crashes to count. The CATMotion editor still hangs sometimes and causes crashes. I just save before I open the CATMotion editor. It hasn’t changed from 2011 that I can see, except the pretty colours on the icons. Even the collarbone glitch is still there. No difference really.

Well that’s certainly disappointing! My subscription hasn’t updated to the new license yet for some reason… and seeing how CAT may have improved was one of the main things I’ve been eager to see.

After you create your CAT rig, you need to use 2011 to skin it. Skin in Max 2012 doesn’t work. :)

I give up on CAT..I have been using it since version 1 and it has gotten so buggy I now refuse to use it. I have used it in production and I am tired of the crashes. I was hopping for the bugs to be ironed out in 2012 but nothing has changed. I was excited when Autodesk bought this but I dont think they’ve done a thing with it since. This thing locks up 3/4 of the time and is plain useless. We shouldnt have to spend more time finding work arounds than actual production time.

It’s a shame because it’s a great tool if it would work… New users should avoid this tool until the many bugs are fixed.

Only that i love CAT :)
CAT are compatible with curve editor but Character Studio not O.o

Biggest bug is that catmotion crashes or freezes up well over half the time. I have to restart max and sometimes it will open up without freezing. If it does work the first time it’s only a matter of time before it locks up again and I have to repeat the process. WHAT A NIGHTMARE. This has been an issue since Cat was introduced in a service update for 3ds 2010. I have noticed the problem gets worse if you attach your character to a path, then just forget about it.

If you just want to play around with a default CAT object without a skinned character or assigned to a path then it seems stable but again, I had been using this in production and it is totally unusable which at this point makes it a useless tool.

I read here somewhere that CAT fixes didn’t make 2012 release and that it would be rolled out via either hot-fix or service pack it had not been decided at that time.

Yes, CAT is being worked on, there should be an update sometime to fix a lot of the problems.

When using CAT, I use the 32 bit version of MAX. I still get crashes, but it’s workable.

Well I haven’t had time to really do anything in CAT in 2012 except play around for a few minutes when I installed it. I was able to crash Max by using CAT in those few minutes…

I’m a total fan of 3ds Max and supporter of Autodesk… but the fact that CAT has been broken since it was added to the 3ds core and never fixed really bothers me. It’s a tool that offers a lot of convenient, simple solutions to character rigging… but it really doesn’t work.

The fact that CAT hasn’t been updated to work is really disturbing. If it really works in 32-bit mode as well as some people say… I wouldn’t know… I never use 32-bit (and didn’t bother installing that version for 2012). This is 3D… it is expected to work in 64 bit.

I have a feeling that this forum (at the bottom of the 3ds forums) isn’t visited by anyone who makes any kind of decision for Max… but just in case… please fix CAT!

Take heart, Shawn, there are words around the net that CAT has been rewritten, it was not ready for the launch, but a fix of some sort is coming soon. It’s one of those carrots which is always dangling over our heads with Max, like Nitrous. Potentially things could go from being a nightmare, to brilliant in one go. At this stage, I’m not sure whether to be an optimist, or pre-judge based on past history. Well, I can’t help being an optimist. Bring it on! :)

Yes, I also heard that CAT has been rewritten and will be released as a hot-fix or service pack. It has just not made it for the release version. There are still some issues to being worked on, like the RG3 updating which should work 100% save then. But I won’t promise anything.

Nice to see you around, Gräck, I recently viewed your demo reel (different from the last one of yours I saw), and it really inspired me to try CAT again. I have a question about how you did something in your reel, but I’ll start a new post if I can’t search out the solution myself.

Apparently Autodesk as released a fix for 2012?

Just saw this news release online:
http://www.offsetnull.com/3ds-max/3ds-max-2012-hot-fix-2/

And the Autodesk page for the HotFix is here:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/ser...d=17366836&linkID=9241178

Here is the text from the first link: it explicitly mentions CAT as being one of the target areas for a fix:

18
JUL/11
The 3ds Max 2012 Hot Fix 2 is now live. Go install it, all ye 3ds Max users:

Autodesk 3ds Max 2012 Hot Fix 2 for 32-bit and 64-bit
Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2012 Hot Fix 2 for 32-bit and 64-bit
Hot fix 2, which comes a month after Service Pack 1, lists 10 new fixes for 3ds Max 2012. It addresses issues with CAT, MAXScript, the material editor, and more. Like the Service Pack before it, Hot Fix 2 is a cumulative update. This means that it includes all the previous fixes (Service Pack 1 and Hot Fix 1), so if you just installed 3ds Max 2012 you don’t need to worry about the previous updates, just download Hot Fix 2.

Take a look at the table included at the end of this post or the “Readme” PDF in the links above for the full list Hot Fix 2 specific fixes.
