| ++++ 3DS MAX 9: Hair Rendering High Resolution via Split Scan Line HELP!!!!
|
|
|
Had crash problem when trying to render out high resolution image. I found out that I have to use split scan line in Net render and stitch them together. See attached image. top one is rendered at 1200x306, has no problem rendering without using net render. But when I try to render 12000x3060, that’s when the max crashes after drawing bottom image, right before it starts to render hair. So I figured out split scan line in Net Render, devided them into 10 sections since 1200x306 worked. It seemed to render fine, but at the end, the max rendered the scene w/o the hair as you can see from bottom image.
My question is, Can’t Max render hair using split scan line? Is there a setting you can think of that causes this? Your help is much appreciated!!
Also, when it renders using backburner, I noticed that only 1 of the 4 CPU (quad core I have) was actively working. I checked Multi Threading in the preference… maybe there’s other setting I have to change in order to use all 4 core???
Thanks!
ps. I’m using Windows vista 32, Max 9 sp2, Quad core xeon, 4gb Ram.

hi Koh,
I really never tried Split Render for Hair and Fur. But I know that Hair and Fur is not multi-threading.
So that’s probably the reason why this uses only one core when rendering.
Hope there will be Multi-threading H&F coming out in the next MAX.

I see.
Does anybody from Autodesk confirm that Hair is not renderable in Split Scan line using Backburner? (I’m using just 1 system)
Also, high resolution render crashes in 4GB Ram/32bit OS. But if I move to 12GB Ram/64bit OS, would it not crash? I see that’s my only option if hair is not renderable in Split Scan line.

koh: question to the side, out of interest, could you post the settings of the hair and fur please, i’ve been trying to get some decent looking grass, in different manners, like PFlow, Scatter-Modifier, applying some bump, and hair & fur.
however, i haven’t been succesful in rendering grass with hair & fur in mental ray?.. and is there a certain workflow to combine scanline-rendering grass (hair & fur) and pasting it on a mr_render afterwards?

koh:
I heard someone said “Net render” works better with 4GB of RAM. My machine has only 2 GB so I can’t confirm about this.
The best way would probably try to save as much memory as possible.
This thread has good information on how to do so.

Boomerang:
I think to render Hair and Fur with MR, you would need Mr Primitive.
But it’s quite slow compared with Buffer. I found a plug-in that help render H&F “Mr Prim” as fast as “Buffer”.
I have gathered some information about MuhHair.

In my experience, grasss in MR is a waste of time. It takes entirly too long to render. I resorted to rendering my grass in scanline and photoshoping the rest of my MR render with the grass.

Could not resolve the problem. So I took the bullet, and switched to Vista 64bit. + 64bit Max. Upgraded RAM to 12GB.
What a difference. Had no single render error since. I was able to render out 15000 pixels wide.
Just wish Hair & Fur could use Multiple CPUs. Seems like it only uses 1 core.
If anyone is having memory issues, I definetely suggest to use 64bit OS and app.
Thanks all.

Hi koh,
That’s so great NEWS. I heard that 3DSMAX 2009’s Hair and Fur is multi-threading.

Thank you for your information. I will keep that in mind.
