HI, I received my Max 10 subscription copy and when I went to authorise it is asking for a group ID, WHF? I have never had to enter this in past installations. Then it goes on to tell me that it is provided on the rear of the DVD installation case, WHICH IT IS NOT, of course! Just my serial (which once again has been displayed on the outside of the packaging for anyone to see).

So do I have to contact my reseller to obtain my “Group ID” seeing that AUTODESK did not provide me with one. I cannot find any reference to my group ID on the subscription site either, again WHF isn’t all info regarding my sub on this site? And why would they not give extra instructions on the authorisation page how to get a “Group ID” if one is not on the back of the box, a few extra lines of additional instructions couldn’t hurt coud it?

Anyone else have to put in a group ID, and how do I go about obtaining one?

And how is this going to effect me in future if I decided not to continue on with the subscription service, I doubt my reseller is going to help out in a hurry if I’m not on subscription in the future and I want to format my HDD and re-install on a non-subscription basis?

Truely a pain in the butt and another pointless exercise, congrats to whoever came up with this new feature! Possibly for next years point release, Max 2009, they can wrap my copy (if there is one) in 7 kilometers of gaffer tape dipped in epoxy resin just to be safe.

Cheers,

Ben

Have you tried putting your serial number in the field?

Hi Don,

Yeah, many times, it says the serial # you entered is not valid (error 2 ) Group ID must be used for subscription customers (hey it’s the one AUTODESK gave me and what I’ve been using for the last 4 years and yes it’s on the back of the DVD case and all over the outside of the cardboard shipping box)?

What now?

Cheers ;)

If you had a prior Serial number before the Subscription Nymber, try selecting that you are doing an Upgrade, and enter the old number in the old number slot.  I don’t recall, but once it tries to register and fails, it creates a file on disk that contains an error log that attempts from preventing you from registering… let’s hope that didn’t happen because if it did, you’ll have to find that and move or delete it.

Well that doesn’t sound good at all. Maybe it would have been easier to get the gaffer tape off!

This is the only serial number I have ever used.

What do you recommend I do?

Cheers,

Ben.

When it fails to register, doesn’t it offer a send email to Autodesk or contact Autodesk feature?  Use that option… I’ll be installing and registering my new version this weekend, so I can check then.

But your best bet is to contact Autodesk.

OK will do. And thanks for the help.

Edit: Tried it again, and it worked this time, another. All’s well, that ends well, but I was a bit worried there for a day. Thanks both for your help and good luck with your install!

I had the same issue before the registration was ready to work on their servers, once it was ready it worked. Yeah, click the link at the bottom of the panel that is open when trying to register in the installer, it will take you to an Autodesk registration page, where you should be able to register.
I’ve used the same serial number for years as well, and do select it is an upgrade, but the serial number on the box should be the correct one.

I usually have to enter the subscription umber and a prior to subscription serial number to register… it gets harder to find that older number as we move on in time. :/

I was not required to put in anything but my subscription number.

Hey just to add to the chaos - I also had a similar problem.  I think it may have then the same thing that happened to Don Gray [see above].  I contaced Autodesk and it turns out that their system was not yet ready to recognize my serial number.  They had to email me the Auth code for it to work.  Regarding “Group ID’s”, since you are a subscription customer you do have a Group ID.  Who knows what it is.  I had to call Autodesk to get mine and it turns out that it is the same as my Max serial number.  Note that your company can have more than one Group ID also, depending how which Autodesk products you have.  I have Max and Inventor and that results in 2 separate Group ID’s.  Weird. :)
