The scene files are compatible, however all the machines must be running the same version (32 bit or 64bit) of Max for network rendering. i.e. you can’t send a 32bit job to a 64bit render node or vice-versa.
Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

The OS is immaterial except insofar as you need a 64bit OS to run 64bit Max. The 32 bit versions (of Max) will run quite happily on a 64bit OS both for workstation use and for rendering.
Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).

I used to use 64-bit version of 3DSMAX 9 but needed to change back to 32-bit version.
The reason is that HSDS modifier in 3DSMAX 9 64-bit will crashes as soon as I apply it on a model to smooth out my character’s cloth.
If somebody could spot this problem and find a way to solve this, please let me know.
Thank you.
