it won’t work on windows 7. the earliest version of max that will work on windows 7 is max 9 and that only if it has sp2 for max is installed.

Either upgrade your Max, or downgrade your OS (Win 2000 should, I think, work ok). Nothing earlier than Max 9 (with all service packs) will work successfully on Vista/Win7.

Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

Max 7 works on windows 7 x64 (no virtualization).
3d studio max 5 needs virtualization, but it’s works “very well”.

Of course, some features will not work.

We are writing a in depth article about 3ds max and we are checking all versions individually (since 3dsr1 for DOS).

But, yes… to work seriously upgrade your Max, or downgrade your OS, like Steve said.

Agree.
Actually I’ve managed to install max 5.1 on win 98 SE under qemu.
