Greetings All,
I am going to buy a Dell computer on Monday primarily for use with 3ds Max9, and I wanted to know if it would better for me to get it equipped with WindowsXP or Vista, and should I ensure that I have any other functionalities on this Dell computer? Thank you
Peace.

It would be a lot safer to get Windows XP, knowing Vista doesn’t run every pce of software and hardware that run on previous windows OS’s. If you get XP, I would highly suggest you get 64 bit that way you can add as much Ram as you want with out having the damned 4GB limit per program. Or 2GB, I forget.
Good luck.

Thank you GarettClem. But with 3ds Max9 do you get any additional functionalities if you have Vista as opposed to having XP? Thank you.

I’m not 100% sure, but Vista probably won’t give you any advantage in max 9 seeing how max 9 came out before Vista was even announced I believe. If you want to get an advantage over other max programs get max 2008, which might give you some extras compared to XP. I’m no expert, but it would make since to me.

For stability and reliability at this precise minute, I’d say XP (64) would be the operating system of choice since Vista is still quite new. But, if you’re like me you may be lured by the new.
I’ve read service pack 1 for Vista has been sent to the testers.
Believe me, XP was full of trouble before they issued at least one service pack, at least here.
There is a spectrum of usability and issues with user’s Vista experience.
For one, I had a good first experience but have found it more problematic as I actually got serious about doing work in Max and Vista.
Max 2008 here is very difficult to use, Max 9 is better for me.
But, added to this is lots of render crashes from what I assume is conflicts with third party plugins and renderer, that were not fully resolved under XP 64, so this has added to my personal difficulty.

From this I would assume that either would be a good choice.

Personally, I would get XP over vista. Vista has not been off to a good start. A lot of programs that run on previous windows Operating Systems won’t run on Vista, along with other hardware as I said before. If you upgrade to Max 2008 you must get 64 bit XP.
With Max 2008 I bet both XP and Vista would utilize the program to its full potential. I think that it lies more in your hardware. If you have a choice, get a dual core processor to help with render times, and a decent graphics cards to help with the flow of the user interface.
If it was me, I would just stick with XP 64 bit pro. Vista can be a pain in the butt. Max 2008 has a few features that Max9 doesn’t have, which I would LOVE to have but I don’t have the money to upgrade, but you only need those things if you are dealing with really dense scenes. At least from what I’ve seen. I’d feel safer if some one else came to give their opinion on this, I’m a novas at best.

Thank you Don,
I was just told that I was being shipped 3ds Max for our next software program. I am so thrilled to use it. I will not know if it is 3ds Max9 or Max2008 until next week. But it seems that Vista has too many problems, but I understand your point that XP did as well before it’s service pack.
I guess I feel strange buying a brand new well packed computer then putting an older OS on it, I can’t get my mind around that. But then again with Vista, if I get it, I would probably be boggled with more confusion than it is worth. I need peace mind with an OS not confusion.
Thank you for your invaluable feedback.
Peace.
