Hi,
I have a file that crashes 3dsmax 2008 64bit when I close or reset the file.
It doesn’t happen in the 32bit Max.
I’ve tried a couple of different Nvidia drivers thinking that might have something to do with it.
but no luck.
Anyone know what might be the cause ?

cheers

Can’t say I know the cause, but in the last four weeks of working in Max 2008, I’ve had multiple crashes when closing certain files.  Usually when switching from one file to the next.  The files we were working on had been created in a previous version of Max, so we just assumed that had something to do with it.

I spent a month working on 64 bit Max 2008 and experienced lots of regular crashes upon closing files, also on loading last used files.  Never found out why, and truth be told, as long as I had saved, it didn’t hurt anything.

I think it was Maneswar (but, I’m not sure, can’t remember) who mentioned if you save your file then do a reset, it might help to avoid the crashes (sorry if I’ve got that wrong :D ).

Yes thats what I started to do, save, reset, crash :)
But the file was okay, its strange it doesn’t happen in the 32bit max.

Yup, I haven’t had it happen with the 32bit.
I think Maneswar also mentioned giving it a little time after resetting, -to allow for time to clear the memory (maybe the 64bit needs more time?)
Maybe save, reset, save, then close? (then step, twirl, step, shuffle step, tap step :D ).

hehe
maybe hold one foot, jump up and down 10 times might help :)
It actually crashes when I hit reset too.

*eyeballs Vista suspiciously* I have yet to get a Vista 64 bit, so maybe it’s Vista not clearing it’s memory with Max, -but I have no clue on that.

You’ve probably tried this, but have you tried saving your scene, then deleting everything (having a scene with 0 in it), saving that (unneeded file..), and doing a reset?

It might be that as you go through your scene deleting items, one of the items when deleted will cause Max to crash.

Or, you could try merging your scene with a new scene, saving, and then try closing?

Of course, I like your idea of the jumping :D , lol.  Maybe try shaking a chicken bone at it? :D

I’ll give that ago if I don’t get this project finished in the next day.
The file got corrupt when saving from 64bit 3dsmax, 64bit wouldn’t opne it again, but it would open in 32bit 3dsmax, hit resave then 64bit max would open it.

cheers

We have had way more crashes in Max 2008 64 bit than we ever did in Max 9 64 bit (all on the same system).

Whenever i bring this up I get flamed or someone from AD responds with the “2008 is the most stable version ever released”.
I would venture a guess that I have easily sent in 50 of the reports when max crashes.
