Since i switched from softimage and CInema 4D to 3ds max I am still wondering why there’s no propper
output to a alpah channel when using glas like or transparent shaders.

I tried several kind of shaders and render modules but nothing helped.

The goal that i want to get is:
- alpha with transparency, specular and reflection information.

The Arch mentalray shaders can produce correct transparecy info but it seams that the shaders doesn’t
support specular and reflection info in the alpha.

The apps like cinema and softimage produce nice alpha’s with spec and reflect info.

Does somebody know a work around? Or I am just being stupid and mist something?

As far as I know, Max does not output the reflection or specular information with the Alpha for transparency.  If you want reflection / specular, you can try rendering those passes in the render pass portion of the render scene dialog… that way, you will get a separate alpha which is transparency and the reflection and specular as 2 separate image files that you can then work with.

You might also want to read about RLA / RPF format output since those file formats contain multiple image passes inside the file, but not much can open the files.

Hi Remco,

A workaround is to change the bending mode in your compositing software to add and render your reflection pass on a black background.
