there are a couple of ways to do this.

1.  Fake it.  Use a self illuminated material and place a light in the scene that will act like the light.  The material will make the object look like it gives off light.

2.  Use Radiosity and the Advanced Override Material or the Architectural Material - Look up the Override Material in the Tutorials and Help file that comes with Max.  There is a great explanation there.

I think there is a way with Mental Ray as well, but I can’t think of it right now.

#1 would be the fastest of all of them.

In mental ray, use the arch&design material and drop a glow (lume) shader into the diffuse slot it will then illuminate itself and objects around it.

Also: Glow (lume) shader in the luminosity slot of raytrace material, Final Gather enabled.

MAX 2008 should have a quick solution for this issue.

should or will?

Those options above are actually pretty quick in themselves.

I saw that the arch&design material in 2008 has a self illumination percentage just like the standard material.

I agree with this, the worst thing that could happen to an application is a “push the buttom and you’re done”
