You can use Attachment as a position controller and use Set Position to fix the object to a face on the skin.

hmm.. I fear I can’t follow you 100%…
do you have any short tutorial, or any short description how you would proceed in order to get that done ?
as instance, a simple cylinder as an armor protecting a hand ?

Bear in mind this is really more of a workaround for this odd situation. I wouldn’t be adding to the model at this late stage after rigging, skinning and animation. Typically I would not delete the bones after adding a point cache, but just deactivate the skin mod, although you may have reasons why.
Here I have applied the Attachment controller to a Dummy rather than the armor object it’s self, easier to align that way.
Create a Dummy, go to the Motion Panel, select Position, click the Assign Controller button, choose Attachment.
Now click the Pick Object button and select the skin mesh, then click the Set Position button and click on a part of the skin mesh you want the object to follow, here I went for the middle of the forearm.
Align the armor to the body part, then Select and Link the armor to the dummy.
