Hello, I’m currently a student working towards a game art design degree and am a semester or two away from getting to work with this program. I want to get a leg up and get started playing around with it I’ve heard it is expensive and have started looking around. Is there a student version available, and if not, what is a good price? I found one place but I’m kinda leery of it (http://www.cheapsoftwares.info/).. It seems simply too good to be true and wants to just get a hold of my credit card number or something. I’ve also noticed Amazon.com is selling it too, but is not listed as a reseller from the main autodesk site. So where is a good, secure, and legitamate place to get a good price on this? Also, is buying a “used” older version and just buying an upgrade an option?

I’d say you are being wise to be leery of such prices.
To get the real deal you should buy from an authorized reseller.
Here is a link from the Autodesk site for finding student versions of their software: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=6080686
If you are not in the US look around there are other links for other countries on the site, though I couldn’t say whether they sell student versions of their software outside the US/Canada.

No, you cannot buy a used copy and then upgrade. No one “buys” 3ds Max. You purchase a license to use the software and the license is usually non-transferable. If you but a used version, you may never be able to get it upgraded, or even authorized to use. You may have purchased the free 30-day trial.
