The “number of segments” is a feature of the original Primitive object (Box, Sphere etc). Once converted to Editable Poly you lose access to that feature.

There are several ways of refining a model to create new edges/vertices/polygons. Perhaps you could explain a little more about what you’re trying to do - an image or a small scene file might help.

I think you r right, sorry. I have this photo. The box has 6 x 6 x 1 segs.

I made my change by converting it into poly.

Can I change the segs now?

Thanks.

I can’t see the existing “segs” - and that image is very dark, but from what I can see the easiest way would be to use a Slice Plane and slice through the model to create the necessary new edges.

Given the simplicity of the model, it would be easier to start again with a new box with more segments.

Hi, Aetoc.  Another option is to use the Edge Connect tool… view Creating additional polys with the Connect tool.

What I think you ought to be doing really is the tutorials which ship with Max. They are designed to give you a good grounding in the basics - well worth the time it takes to do them.
