Hi,
I’m pretty new to rendering with the Autodesk products and I’m at the point now where I want to create my own materials for use with my model. I have a vague awareness of the fact that materials are composed of images, bump maps, and maybe some other stuff. Can anyone give a general explanation of their composition and how you go about making your own? I’d really, really appreciate it. Thanks!

Since this is the Autdesk 3ds Max 2008 forum, the first place to look would be the Essential Skills movies that come up when you start Max. The second place to look would be the tutorials that cover materials that come with Max.
If you do not have Max, only Viz and materials are not covered, try the references here:

I hate to say “read the manual” or “do the tutorials” but if I tried to explain the different components of a Standard Material, I would wind up re-writing the existing documentation.
