I am trying to use the cut command to cut a Polygon into 2. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I would love to know why it works sometimes and not others. It’s obviously I am doing something wrong and when they cut it’s just luck.

I am doing the following steps.

1. I select the object
2. I select the polygon.
3. I select the cut button and click in the split check box
4. The cursor changes shape and I drag a line across the polygon. Click the left mouse button to choose the second point of the cut line
5. I hit the right mouse button to exit the cut command.

Any idea’s of where I’m going wrong. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Hi, i like to read this thread because im having the same problem with editable mesh and Cut function
(in 3dmax2009). I know the benefits of working with polys and connect, but i like to use editable mesh and i can’t cut in some cases.

I can’t open http://discussion.autodesk.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5452412, so if somebody can please tell me how to fix this issue i will be regarding you.

Sorry and thanks

Could you post the polygon in a zipped Max file?

There had been problems posted in the past, and I believe it has been reported as a bug. See this thread from the old forum.

Select the edges and hit “connect” and it will give the same result - best in edit poly mode rather then edit mesh

If you want to cut face - that is like drawing points on the surface of a polygon

Me too.  Since I’ve learned Connect, I don’t think I’ve used Cut once!

Whenever cutting turn snaps on for accuracy and less headaches, you can cut in poly, vertice or edge mode just make sure snaps is activated and set correctly. Edge connect is very useful but when that is not possible manual selecion or using slice plane in poly, vertice or edge mode can help sort the problem out when all else fails. Just a bit of cleaning up to do aftewards.

floating/unused polies and non-quad faces are generally the cause of most functions like the cutting tool to fail, also certain camera angles can create these issues. I have found that keeping to quad-faces and using the weld tool to ensure there are no floating/unused polies will keep 3DSMAX and its functions working happily.
