Ok, here is the short version of the story.
3ds Max has been using incremental release numbers since 1996 - 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9, with a couple of point releases inbetween.
Instead of calling the next version 3ds Max 10, “3ds MaX” or “Ten!”, Autodesk decided to switch all its products (including AutoCAD, VIZ, Maya, Max, Revit, you name it) to the same naming convention which uses the number of the current FISCAL year (from financial point of view, the year 2008 started around March in the Autodesk universe) .
This has the positive effect of knowing which versions came at about the same time and are thus more or less compatible with each-other (Max 2008 can share data with VIZ 2008 and import Revit 2008 data and so on).
Internally, the SDK version number of Max 2008 is still 10, and plug-ins from “10” are compatible with plug-ins from “9”. :)
