Does Max 2008 require a hardware lock/dongle/network card to be installed?

When I had bought maya years ago, I had to get a parallel printer port dongle in order to install it so just in case I wanted to install maya on another machine I could just move the dongle to that machine and install it with the FlexID it required that was located on the dongle to be found.

Does Max need anything to install on a different machine or is it without that requirement? That’d be cool if it was like that.

If I didn’t buy a dongle for maya i’d have to pay alias $100 for support to reinstall on a new machine.

How does the key generator work?

Or do you mean, I get a license key and I just type it in whereever I install it?(with no troubles reinstalling it elsewhere?)

You get a code then you send that to autodesk whom gives you auth code to intialize the software - it’s fast and easy - and the software works for 30 days without it in the event it should take any time

You can install 2008 on as many systems as you want.
However your license type will determine access and the number of systems that can be running as full seats. (Render slaves do not need to be authorized.)

If you purchase a stand-alone license, you may be able to authorize only 1 or 2, depending upon your End User License Agreement, but you can only legally use one at a time. Max comes with a Portable Licnese Utility that allows you to export your license from one system and import it to another.

When you install 3ds Max 2008 you do not need a serial number. The first time you launch the product you are given an option to run it for the 30 days, or authorize it. If you choose authorize, you’ll enter your serial number and other identifying information. If you want to register and authorize on-line, and you are connected, the remainder of the process is automatic. You are given the option of phoning in the request code to get an authorization code, or you can email the request code to get an authorization code.

oh Awesome Tim! Thanks for the reply!

I like this “portable license utility” that you’ve mentioned. I am only going to get one standalone license because, it’s just going to be me using it.

My original thoughts behind my first time purchase of maya was that it was expensive and if anything should happen to the computer I was working on (like a fire which did happen) , paying for a new computer and ALSO paying money to get support to reinstall on a new pc would be an out of pocket expense I wouldn’t want.

BTW Is the portable license utility free?

It is an integral part of the Max install, so no EXTRA cost
it is just a part of the way max works now.

The hardware locks frequently failed, and took a long time to repair (and still needed software to operate them).

The new software-only system allows fast repairs (most of the time) by just getting a new auth code.  Note: this is the “standalone” license system; there’s also a “network” license, where licenses can be shared by multiple users on a network.
